Students protest over fees

That's not the case here though, if they were complaining about having to pay for repeating a year that they squandered and then followed to trash the place I'd say bring out the teargas and rubber bullets. The issue here is that the cost of schooling is going up and nobody but management seem to be benefitting, they have as much of a case as someone moaning about government spending money on expensive cars.

The institution is only following government's example of taking all the money for them and keeping the masses uneducated. With the masses uneducated they can bull**** them with their election promises and they will vote for them every time and so stay in power for ever.

education is key - so their education is our priority as it should be for every parent.

And it comes at a price. A price which the majority of parents in SA, and those who are hurt most by price increases, cannot afford. As a citizen and taxpayer of SA in the top 5 - 10% of the wealth of the country you obviously understand this, right?

Hey, at least they want to be educated. Rather them stay at the university and strike to hopefully continue, than go to the streets to rape and pillage.

yes striking is the only answer

Gibbs me dat!!

seems that Africans in general seem to have the mentality of children - if I dont get my way I will throw a tantrum, they are supposedly learned people who should be able to apply reasoning ... or am I mistaken?

eish! our next anc elected government officials are really going to improve the lot of future generations.

Striking is by no means an African mentality...in France they even have this thing called "bossnapping", i.e. taking managers hostage :D

I agree with the want to be educated bit, but there has to be other ways to sort things out, than striking - this is not 1970 anymore

if we had to strike everytime food, petrol , rates & taxes go up would it be acceptable, we make plenty of sacrifices to educate our kids, and they don't get grants etc.

Its not the only answer but if the administration is anything like the case with Wits, students will strike until there is middle ground on the matter.

I was part of student strikes when I thought concerns were fair. I refused to join strikes when I thought the concerns were unsubstantiated.

you are one of them? ..............

with all the new black millionaires in SA, why not find a sponsor, or get a company to pay your studies and work it off, that's how it was done in my day.

Yes, in my high school I was involved in strikes against unfair system. A poll on myBB wasn't going to solve them problem in my schooling time.

At varsity, I accepted things as they were but fortunately, luck prevailed.

Unfortunately, being at university for 6 years has shown me that there isn't much else you can do. Fees are not negotiable. Pay them or be excluded from the university. Although striking and disruption isn't an answer either.

how many of you striked? and did you care that it effected those that did not strike?

I agree with you that life ain't fair, but the South African way at present seems to be:

I dont get my way ... mmmm ... strike, in a strike there are no winners.

strike without damaging anything, or disruption those that are not striking and maybe it could be seen different. - not saying that you did, but every strike leads to carnage, and I as tax payer have my own sh*t to worry about.

so why they can't be Coloured or indian ....

why they must be BLACK? Doesn't make sense for me ..........

or you already assumed ONLY black will protest against fees?

(I cannot see "BLACK students are protesting" in the news) ;)
Indian students unlikely, Coloured students perhaps, Black students very likely.
I stand corrected here but I've never seen a racial group other than black people going on strike on the news. And every strike I've seen in person has been a group of Black people.

I don't get the mentality behind striking, boycotting or whatever you call their running out into the streets in packs chanting. As an example, could you see a group (as large as those you see on the news) of white people standing outside their place of work or walking down the street demanding pay increase etc?

Disclaimer: text is text and void of any physical gestures that make up 85% of communication of someones point so don't go pointing me out as racist :o

Fees have to increase at least in line with inflation in order to meet running costs. In order to improve (Not simply maintain) facilities fees need to be even higher to build up capital, or repay incurred debt.

your statement is to logical for this thread ;)

The only reason these guys strike is because they know they are freaking useless in the study and learn stuff department. They have a spot to study, they should make it happen, work part time, save money spend on bling and beer and use that to get educated now. So that in the future, they can earn and support their needs.

How much are these fees anyway, a couple thousand per year/term. Surely they could make that up in a few part time jobs? Or am I being just crazy here, expecting this ?

No I didn't, but students often protest, and hand their opinions over to a dean/chancellor. Everyone has the right to protest peacefully.
