Students protest over fees

Indian students unlikely, Coloured students perhaps, Black students very likely.
I stand corrected here but I've never seen a racial group other than black people going on strike on the news. And every strike I've seen in person has been a group of Black people.

I don't get the mentality behind striking, boycotting or whatever you call their running out into the streets in packs chanting. As an example, could you see a group (as large as those you see on the news) of white people standing outside their place of work or walking down the street demanding pay increase etc?

Disclaimer: text is text and void of any physical gestures that make up 85% of communication of someones point so don't go pointing me out as racist :o

to be fair-> white also will strike ....

actually which group of people will strike? Not Black or white ....
-> uneducated or idiots.

we saw "doctors", "teachers" went to strike, why? because they are idiots. why they are idiots? think about it... :D

did you ever see "investment bankers" strike?
did you ever see "CEOs" strike?
did you ever see "rich people" strike?

I hate people "strike", tell me, for what? ;)

yes striking is the only answer

Gibbs me dat!!

seems that Africans in general seem to have the mentality of children - if I dont get my way I will throw a tantrum, they are supposedly learned people who should be able to apply reasoning ... or am I mistaken?

eish! our next anc elected government officials are really going to improve the lot of future generations.

An 8.5% increase in fees is too much, and in the same breath their counterparts believe an 8.5% increase is too little!

This is Africa: take, take, take!

Yes, in my high school I was involved in strikes against unfair system. A poll on myBB wasn't going to solve them problem in my schooling time.

At varsity, I accepted things as they were but fortunately, luck prevailed.

Ah, someone with experience. How did you strike? Was it not a protest or a boycott? What services were you with holding?

Or is it just sheer coincidence that a bunch of people bunked class on the same day that the meaning of the word 'strike' was taught?

Am I missing something - how do students strike ?

I can understand the lecturers striking would be a problem, but if the students strike who is affected besides themselves ?

Most protests, strikes during my schooling days were not about fees but more about "general defiance campaigns" against unfair system. In my case, it was against elements of Bantu Education during my primary and high schooling. Most boycotts were consumer related and protests were met with force and legislation. Strikes then develop when the doors are locked for collective discussions.

Bunking classes on same day will not archive anything. Most 'stay-away' from school were a result of political unrest and the resulting dangers.

The universities are to soft, if the students strike bugger it kick them to the curve, there are many many people out there who will make a plan to pay the fee's so that they can attain some level of higher learning and a degree.

Look - I am picking on the word 'strike' being used incorrectly. It did not start out as being a dig at any forumite - the incorrect usage started in the news 24 article. Students are not paid to go to school. They do not do any 'work' that they could withhold. At best they are either boycotting or protesting.

Locking themselves in any room to discuss the merits of their protest action is still not a strike.

Now for everyone who thinks that being pedantic is irrelevant - the sympathy that I may have has been diluted because the facts as reported are already being questioned. There is no strike. Students do not strike so why should I bother to read any more bulldust. And let's assume that the rest of the article is correct - how would I trust that which has been written if there are already obvious flaws?

Take a look at the taxis going on strike over the BRT last year. Another load of hogwash. Taxis did not strike - the drivers did not withhold their labour from their bosses. The taxis (owners and drivers) embarked on protest action against the City.

I think that a lot of this really comes back to being a reflection of politics. People are being nominated into positions of being decision makers, the is no accountability. So if you have a grievance, nobody really has to care.

Simple look at the funding model for a university/technicon - the student pays a fee and the uni is further subsidised by the government based on enrollment figures. You want them to wake up? Don't enroll. No fees and no subsidy will quickly **** down the place.

Obviously, you'll need the vast majority of the student body to boycott the institution. Just you and two buddies are not going to make a difference. But neither is the 3 of you causing a scene. Unfortunately there is no right to higher education and if you can't pay, that's just sad no matter how gifted you may be.

Striking works. So does violence. What's worse than people striking is the fact that our society rewards it.

How exactly do you generalise the mentality of an entire continent? You can't think that all, or even the majority of African/black people think the same way. Just wondering how racism works, because it sounds pretty damn stupid.

Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck

how do you know they are BLACK? :D

'cos the black man has the GUTS to stand together and speak with one voice.... unlike the whiteys who build bigger walls and whine in private about how unfair life is.

This is also happening in California, their increases are in the region of 30-40%.

Do they ever whine and dine...

sorry the white man don't dance around like mindless barbarians, we kinda got passed that phase 500 years ago during the Dark ages...

We work to earn a living and try to make alternative arrangements, we don't strike and hope things come to us.

Its not race related. It happens everyday on CA forums that people stand together and speak with one voice.

500 years ago, really? Not heard of the UK or Europe?
