The funny thing is, the original meaning for the k-word was indigenous to South Africa (or something very similar to that effect). Also, the spelling was "k.a.f.f.i.r", not the spelling they use now. For whatever reason that may be.
 
Its more about people using them in a derogatory way.

Agree with that, guess it depends on who is using the word and in what context. Baring in mind the history the words have, I view umlungu to be a lot less offensive (in the general sense) than the n & k word.

AFAIK, it originated from the Arabic word for an unbeliever and was introduced into our history at some point by explorers to this continent.
