Is there a way to study online to become a qualified electrician with wiremans license? If not, what are the options to become one? My nephew will be matriculating next year and shows interest in becoming an electrician.

I want to try and help out, but with them living in a small town and far away from a big city it might be difficult.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

I am speaking under correction but here in the Western Cape they're trying to bring it back i.e. the trade school/technical college type setup.
Let me see if I can find the name: found it: https://newgentradeschools.co.za/

Doing a practical course online is not the most preferred way, hence it being difficult to find an online school.

I don't think there are many options, what small town is he in, surely there must be an FET college there?

Yeah, I understand the practical part.. They stay in Swellendam. BTW - What is a FET college?

Where people study for trades like the one he is interested in. I see they are called TVET colleges these days. Google TVET colleges in Swellendam, you will know the place better, he can then go there and get information.

It used to stand for: further education and training, per Champ, it has been renamed to TVET colleges, these were the colleges where you used to do the old N1 to N6 type of qualifications.

Per google: TVET definition: TVET stands for Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

There is nothing in Swellendam:

Yes Western Cape government link still refers to FET.

I know there was a private electrician training institute somewhere in the northern suburbs, Cape Town.

So it costs R120k over 3 years to become a leccy?

Can one take this skill to Australia after the 3 years?
I dont think so. Where do you get your total?

AFAIK, you do an accreddited course and do your apprenticeship and trade test?

@soulie If I recall you an electrician? Any advice.

Without even thinking I know I need to go for Platinum.

Will Platinum get me into Aus, or UK, or NZ?

@soulie is salty as **** and is like drawing blood from a stone.

even the basic N1 is hard, you really need to be diligent and know your maths.. as with all and any studying 99% of it you never use. It's not teenager level stuff, you will be shocked... excuse the pun

Here, try this basic N1 question :
An electric motor has a power rating of 7.5 kW and operates at an efficiency of 85%. If the motor is connected to a 400V, three-phase supply, calculate the current drawn by the motor.

with regards to Australia, yes you can no you can't lol. Your licence needs to be assessed, then you need to apply for an Aus licence with exams, it's the same even if you wanted to be a GP etc. So to answer your question, you can't just rock up there and start tomorrow as an electrician.

I can accept that, so what you're saying is this can get me through the door, so I can blow their socks off with my brilliant 100% score entrance exam?
