Studying IT at Monash University

Does anyone have any experience with the BSC IT from Monash? My son wants to go there next year.

What I can tell you is that they have the reputation of being one of the best unis worldwide for IT. Is he physically going there or studying correspondence? Lucky kid.

Oh wow - I had no idea they had a local campus. That's awesome! I wonder if they offer correspondence through the local campus.
 
I have been doing my BSC through UNISA - and was seriously considering moving to Monash.


During the process of applying for credits - and admission - they looked at my CV - and my results so far. The lecturer told me that they are unable to credit me for any programming modules - as I did C++ at unisa - and they are doing JAVA.

This was made even worse by the fact that I've worked with JAVA for two years (at my previous job).

The feeling I got is that even though the degree is offered by Monash AUS, the local "talent" leaves a lot to be desired.
 
I would have said that C++ is close enough to Java to get a credit. I would be able to help my son with his programming because I've taught programming for many years (with RPM). I'm more interested in the reputation of the university vs cost.

Indeed, was quite a shock...
 
That rating is based on research output (most probably) then obviously Monash would do badly because they don't have many post-graduate offerings at the SA campus and therefore don't produce much research.
 
It's still all based on research output. eg UCT has a huge amount of scientific research published compared to the other universities in SA and therefore earns its reputation from that. Not taking anything away from them (they're excellent) but When you're dealing with newish universities that don't have many postgraduate students they won't produce much research and their graduates may be just as capable.

Rhodes imo is one of the better universities that offer IT but they're small and have a small science faculty in comparison to the larger universities and therefore will not feature as well on the ratings.

I think you're right. Honestly, how WSU can beat anyone at anything is a mystery.
 
The Monash courses seem pretty standard.. don't think you'd be going down a bad path with them.

Undergrad courses are generally pretty much the same. I would however suggest the following:

UCT for their cutting edge computer science (they have a GPU computing course in Hons!).
UJ for teaching stuff you can actually use in your job.
Tuks for serious computer science (look at their staff list).
