I can't figure it out - how do I load data on my iPad's Vodacom micro sim from home? I'm on wi-fi atm.

1) Load money onto that phone account via internet banking.

2) Go to www.vodacom.co.za, then My Vodacom.

3) Create an account for that number, go into the account and convert the money to a data bundle. Example, 2.3GB costs R389

QED

You need a password to get into My Vodacom, which is sms'd to you - how do you propose I get that on the micro sim?

PS enjoying the Xoom?

Few options. Find someone with a iPhone where you can pop the sim onto or get a adapter for the microsim. If you have a jailbroken iPad, you can get SwirlyMessage from the Cydia store that gives SMS functionality to the iPad.

Bloody hell, so it is easier to buy an ipad than to connect to Vodacom. Go figure.

Some banks allow you to load a data bundle directly. IIRC FNB is one of them. If you can at least load airtime you can always call the helpdesk to convert the airtime to a bundle, but getting the SIM active for Vodacom website is probably going to be worth the effort in the long run.

Thanks, going to try VTime in the interim. Can't believe what a PITA this is turning out to be.

It's very nice, thanks ! The general user experience is pretty much identical to using an iPad, but I enjoy not being constrained by iTunes, and also the prospect of USB Host and microSDHC (whenever they activate that).

The battery life is very good, it is being tested to the limit by the almost 24 hour power cut where I live in Joburg.

Oops, didn't think of that - I guess that you will need an adapter and then insert it into a phone.

I assume that you don't have software on the iPad that can pick up an SMS, but that is the other alternative.

Cool, decent competition in the tablet market is good for all of us!
