Stupid Dos question

What is the > in front of mine

C:\>

want to do the following

1.Close all other applications before launching HP USB Key ROMPAQ Setup Utility.

2.On the Windows Task Bar select Start, then Run, and enter
the following on the command line:
cmd

3.In the command prompt window enter the following command line:
[Path]\install x:
(where x is the drive letter of the USB flash media device)

I've learnt something :)
Yeah there's a lot of shortcuts that you pick up as you go along. Two others which save me a lot of time -

- change from any folder to any folder just put the path within quotes eg. C:\WINDOWS>cd "c:\program files"

- display history of previous commands: shift+F7, no need to keep track of your previous commands by pressing up or down.

Ignore that > in the path - that's just your cue to type (i.e. path is finished).
If it says C:\> then you are at root of C (generally).
If you really have to see C:\ at the prompt, just enter:
Prompt=$P
It may make you feel better (although will be functionally identical to the c:\> prompt lol)

You can also do: prompt $P $G $T $G
In fact, while you're at it, enter:
prompt $P "<--- This is where you are, your wish is my command..."

Just for laffs ;)

Do you remember the good old DOS days? I started using computers with DOS 3.1 I think it was.

Same here.

When you added DEVICE=ANSI.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS you are able to change the dos prompt's colors :D

My fave trick was to enter

PROMPT $PPORN$G

which'll display C:\PORN> at the command prompt :D:D:D

right, this may sound very stupid, but it's a greathen than sign $g, check prompt /? if you don't believe me :)

(where x is the drive letter of the USB flash media device)
did you come right with this?

haai, the c;\ whatever is the current drive and path, the $p argument of the prompt command. sorry to be so technical about it, but when it comes to DOS i pretty much own it. ;)
