Im not sure if this has being posted here yet.. but surely the sign of an unhealthy government is when it makes retarded laws?

l DRIVING an unregistered vehicle or driving at 131km/h in a 100km/h zone will carry a penalty of two demerits;
l Travelling at 100km/h in a 60km/h zone will cost you four demerits and you would have to explain yourself to a magistrate;
l Driving in a convoy over the weekend carries a fine of R250;
l Drivers not carrying their driver’s licence in the car will be fined R500 and given one demerit;
l Undisplayed licence discs carry a fine of R500 and one demerit point;
l Driving with defective or no wheel flaps will have a fine of R250;
l Drivers not keeping to the required following distance will be fined R1000 and given three demerit points; and
l A driver caught with any part of his or her body (elbow, etc) protruding from moving vehicle will be fined R250. — Sibongile Mkani

hand signals?

What I want to know is how this will actually apply to taxis. Most of them have fake licenses anyway! They can't arrest them because they give out fake addresses too!

Good question. I'd also like to know.

Try this, looks like it applies mainly to trucks.

"Wheel flaps – Regulation 217

(a) which are properly maintained and approved by the vehicle manufacturer; or
(b) which comply with standard specification SABS 1496 "Wheel flaps fitted to motor
vehicles."

(2) The provisions of subregulation (1) shall not apply to -

(a) a chassis or a cab and chassis which is being driven to a manufacturer, builder or motor dealer;
(b) a truck-tractor; or
(c) a vehicle which complies with the provisions of standard specification SABS 1496 "Wheel flaps fitted to motor vehicles", due to its design. A copy of SABS 1496 is being mailed to you."

R1000 for not keeping your following distance?!

You'd never get anywhere in peak traffic, everyone would keep cutting in front of you!

Driving 100 in a 60 zone gets you 4 demerits!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:
Following distance? whos gonna inspect that? Imagine getting caught for that!:eek: We'll just be leaving gaps for taxis to push their way in!

I see. That one seems to make sense then :)

wheel flaps flapping away

our old landy does not have any wheel flaps - would love to see the speedcop doing some bundu bashing to fine us for driving around without flaps, and us hanging out of windows :D

but yes, body parts out of cars is a bit doff especially when you had to use hand signals (and I'm not speaking about the .!.. kind of signals) :D

Mmmmm no numberplates, R250 and 1 demerit....:)

Why 4 demerits? Its a bit harsh dont you think? Should be 2 demerits.

So how much does a demerit cost?
- In JHB 1x R100 + that bottle of whiskey,
- In CT 1x R50 + a bankie + a blow around the corner :-)
