I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but since my cap is up and i cant check for myself i though id ask you guys.

If got a HP Dx 7400, it has a Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz. A Friend of mine recently bought himself a new I7 machine and said i could take over his old Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz processor out of an HP Dx 2300. Now Id love to jump at this chance. My question is, is it as simple as simply swapping the two CPU's or do i have to go through a special settings and such?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

no special settings as long as the board supports it.Remember the heatsink paste and check your bios for any strange settings there.otherwise just swop over simple easy

The heatsink paste i'll find at my local Pc store. What would be a strange setting in the bios? How do i find out if the board supports it. They are both intel cpu's, both HP machines with stock motherboards.

So a BIOS update is out of the question, I'm just saying as I've always updated my BIOS to detect a new CPU and haven't tried wasting thermal paste and cleaner to see if anything happens without the it.

afaik..your board should supports it.With boards of today there can be certain settings in the bios to change things of the cpu like frequency and voltage levels but in your case dont worry with those, leave it alone if you dont know whats it for:D.......just swop it.Its hard to damage a cpu unless you really unlucky.

According to HP, the motherboards of the DX 2300 and DX 7400 are both Socket T (LGA775 industry standard Micro ATX form factor, supporting single: Intel Core 2 Duo, Pentium D, Pentium 4 or Celeron D). You should be able to just plug in and go...

The DX 7400 supports the following CPU's:
Intel Celeron Processors:
Intel Celeron 420 Processor (1.60-GHz, 512-KB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Celeron 430 Processor (1.80-GHz, 512-KB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Celeron 440 Processor (2.00-GHz, 512-KB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium dual-core Processors:
Intel Pentium E2140 Processor (1.6-GHz, 1-MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Pentium E2160 Processor (1.8-GHz, 1-MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo Processors:
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 Processor (2.0-GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor (2.13-GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Processor (1.86-GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Processor (2.13-GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Processor (2.33-GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 1333-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Processor (2.66-GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 1333-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Processor (3.0-GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 1333-MHz FSB)
Intel Core 2 Quad Processors:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor (2.403-GHz, 8 MB L2 cache, 1066-MHz FSB)

What model is the old processor? How much you want for it?

The old proc is worth probably 800-1000, less if it's been overclocked. If it doesn't include HSF maybe aim at the low end of those prices.
