Yes, I know nothing about ADSL. So shoot me!

Now for my question:
Which ADSL package is good for streaming live video to an international server, almost 24/7?

Replies are very appreciated.

All you n00b bashers can start bashing me now...

Well if you want to do video the fatest connection possible ... ie 1024 and video eats bandwith so uncapped would be the best option. But we are talking of some serious money per month R1000 +

So basically broadcasting right ? in that case 512k since it yields 256k up as the 1024k one for cheaper. remember upload speed. Downstream is what they advertise more since adsl is suited more for downstream apps.

welcome to the forum :)

it is a trick question - the real answer being none of the current packages

Can video stream well on a slower ADSL?

If I lower the bit-rate of the streaming, will it use less bandwidth?

Sorry for the questions. I'm totally clueless.

What are you streaming? Is there going to be constant motion involved?

I think I'm going to download Quicktime Broadcaster and play around a bit. :)

See, in some time soon, (hopefully) I want to have my own website, (I already have one but it's a subdomain (blog) from a friend) so, like, I want to get my domain, hosting from somewhere (international server!) and run a live cam site (live almost all the time), like those that show the traffic, but mine would be like an insight to my life and a weather cam plonked onto the roof of my place (getting soon).

Anyway, I should get to the point. I want to get the most affordable ADSL. Maybe if there is an uncapped one? I'll just mainly and most importantly be using the ADSL for streaming / broadcasting / uploading the live video feed from the cameras and to use instant messangers to type to chat with friends and IRC chatting, and browsing my websites of my friends who are overseas. I would like to use P2P and be able to download things like brushes for Adobe Creative Suite (international sites).

I don't mind if there is a cap to international downloading because the main purpose for using the ADSL is to broadcast the cameras live.

Any suggestions for which ADSL I could use?

The problem is that caps count your total transfer, both up and down. It would be very expensive broadcasting internationally 24/7.

Uncapped accounts usually block any p2p totally, and I'm not sure if they'd allow for uploading video streams. I've never used uncapped though - somebody from an ISP will probably clear that up.

Bandwidth is going to be your biggest headache. With 2 live streams you're going to be uploading a fair bit and that will chew up your cap.

I suppose one way to avoid that is to use motion detection so only changes are uploaded - why waste a ton of bandwidth showing an empty room while you're working 12 hours a day trying to pay for all this.

As krycor said - the 1024 and 512 both have the same upload speed - 256 - so pick either one of them and an ISP with a huge cap.

I'd actually consider trying a local host first and moving it if your traffic gets too hectic.

My friend in the US is willing to host my site when i got things setup etc. He says ZA servers are slow and cost alot more than international.

Fair enough but wrt bandwidth its probably going to cost you less when you factor in the bandwidth.

Hosting in the states is peanuts but you might want to work out in advance how much you're going to be uploading with those two cams you want.

Where is your target audience? SA or international?

$%$#$# telkoms is a *beep*

I don't get why overseas, consumers can have uncapped, high speed connections and we can't! *throws a hissy fit*
