sub-300ms ping on WA's new network (shaped bandwidth)

Last time I used them was around July/August when the unshaped was optionally on Verizon. This was also the time when it was impossible to play WoW with South African dsl and Verizon were the only decent providers to play on at that time. Damn sacrifices you have to make to be a hardcore raider

you can now go through saix unshaped, verizon unshaped or their own network unshaped.

I'm pretty sure you'd stick with their own network once you see how low that ping can go by itself...they're in full control of their own network and as I understand it they're prioritizing traffic to the wow servers (not sure if it's done yet or will be done)

I previously used an imaginet unshaped account which was very stable with good performance (200-300ms) but quite expensive. This weekend I tried out the WA shaped option hoping for something only slightly worse but for less than half the price. To my surprise I was getting ping times of about 20ms faster on average (180-280ms) over the weekend. I will continue to evaluate for the rest of the month but for now I'm very happy. Well done WA

Yup, the lowest constant ping I had with them was 210ms. They usually below the 300ms mark, but because I'm only on 384k, any kind of interference (like AV updating) messes around with the ping slightly for a bit.

WA's shaped ADSL option is definitely the cheap way to go. Plus all the patches are on freezone which you don't pay for downloads!

At the time of the post I wasn't sure if they were "unshaping" gaming/voip protocols on their new network yet. They do. And as stated by Netless, faster by 20ms at least

Problem I have with Gamemax is disconnections in raids if there is a lot happening.

Unshaped WA I don't disconnect at all and the pings are really stable.

Yes, should have no problems.

Otherwise, I'm around 380ms using unshaped WA.

How do you change to use Verizon/Saix etc again? Something about adding a suffix at the end?

At the end of the user name you add .v for Verizon but I have problems sometimes and can not connect when using it, currently on the normal WA

@dal2000, we are using 512 unshaped with 2 ppl playing, we are doing about 380 avg latency, even with 10man, but 25man can be a problem sometimes for us and get a lot of DC's then.

I have also had it a few times where the auth servers at .v doesnt respond or fails my authentication.

Takes a day sometimes before they realise its not working and fix it.

The .s saix authentication seems to work pretty much all of the time though.

I have a 4Mbit line and I just applied the standard registry tweaks. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I am close to the exchange and the phone line is only a few years old.

That's correct. Nothing = Default WA. Anything else (.s,.v) is the other networks.

Server location depends on the pings yes. But I doubt it's by much as the server I play on is located in Holland. If you have a server in Paris for example, you should be getting better pings.

However, the SAT3 terminates at the coast by France somewhere (or Spain, I can't remember) and those guys do not have a problem with local bandwidth so their back-haul capacity is insane. IMO the most you can shave off of a ping by playing on a different server is 20-30ms.

I must admit this WA account on there new network works lekka!! Got myself a 3gig shaped account and from 600ms to 1000ms on a Telkom Unshaped account now to a WebAfrica Shaped account now i get 200ms to 400ms neva saw a green screen on my wow on official before!
