Sub-R3,000 entry-level smartphone roundup - May 2023

Surprised to see how many phones are using mediatek cpus these days, they werent bad back in the early china phone days, but expect lots of little snafus in terms of compatibility.

Honestly rather save up and get a Galaxy A5x or A7x series phone....

depends on the type of Mediatek processor. Some of them, like the Dimensity range is very good.

I think the bigger problem with these phones is usually that they do not support all the video and audio codec's due to licensing issues

Running any other video player solves that no?
 
I'm looking in this price range currently for a new phone for my mother, she had a Xiaomi Redmi S3 for years until she dropped it in water, it was holding up surprisingly well.

I'm trying to decide now whether to go Xiaomi again and get the 10c, or go for something in the Samsung A series like the A13.
