SUBARU OUTBACK : 2009

Here is an example. Just last week, I went to Volvo to buy a centercap for my one wheel, and I asked one of the service guys hanging around, what it would cost to have my car service, a 115k service. He said about R4500 - R5000. That's not even a cambelt service. What the **** is so expensive?

How the **** can you claim I do not know how a Maintenance Plan works? And BTW, what does it have to do with my question? I said, what justifies a R10k service. Read my other posts.

And if you read my posts you will see that I've been answering questions on extended MAINTENANCE plans on a Subaru - I couldn't give a damn about a Volvo.

And while I was talking about a Subaru, you didn't bother to answer. Do you know what gets replaced that costs R10k? What makes that service so expensive? How much does the cambelt cost? It's OK to say you don't know, allright? It's not so bad not to know, I don't.

Let me try and simplify it for you. Your next service might not cost R10k, it could be R1000 BUT should something go wrong like the engine, gearbox etc conk out you are covered for that eventuality.

That 2 year service plan will cover the cambelt change, but I'm not sure how much it will cover, so you want to make certain that the full 100 000 service is covered otherwise you will be forking out yet another 12k at 100 000.

Just out of curiosity could you by any chance find out which parts besides the actual belt they change with the cambelt service?

Yes, it's not just the belt that is changed but the entire pulley system as well.

Whilst all that is out, things like water and oil pump are checked, and if they appear to be worn, they are replaced as well. I agree that in some cases it is somewhat of an overkill, but it is one way of making sure that nothing lets go for the next 100 000.

If you have the belt off you might as well replace the oil & water pump as the labour to get that far is already done.

Years ago my water pump clapped out 2 days before I had to drive to CT. On such short notice I found some place in Umbilo I've never heard of that would do the job the next day as I was still at work. I kukked myself all the way to CT as I did not know this guy from a bar of soap or how good his work was :D

Sure, there are a couple of options - 4 years 105 000 costs R 9440 and 5 years 120 000 is R 26520, but that has to be done before buying the car - Motorite does a similar one, and it can be added after you buy, but I don't have those prices.

Thanks!

I understand a motorplan/maintenance completely. I purchased a Motorite one for all my cars that I have owned for just this reason. Maybe I was not clear here. I am also not talking about the price of a motorplan/maintenance plan. I was asking why are services on these cars (and others, but let's stick to Subaru) so damned expensive. My friend had a WRX, and they quoted him close to R10k for a 110k service. WHAT do they do that justifies that amount? Cambelt is expensive, but not a couple of thousand. The rest...plugs, oil, filters, and a million and one point check?

I have the OTP for the vehicle infront of me - to sign or not to sign. I did not get the Motorite Used Vehicle Maintenance plan, or the Motorite Service Plan. What I have taken was the McCarthy BFS Warranty for R9K, 2 yrs / unlimited mileage....

Why the f#$%#$% is the "On the Road Fee" so expenses, a full R4K.

I spoke to a workshop owner not too long ago, most of these warrantys are managed by the same people.

A cambelt itself is normally quite cheap. But the labour associated in changing a cambelt is quite extensive. Whilst you have to go through the process, it then makes sense to replace other related parts at the same time as a preventative measure (like the rollers and tensioners and in many cases the water pump as well). All these add up!

Still a ripoff if you ask me. How would you think they justify the cost of about R4.5k for a normal service?

R4.5k for a "normal" service is indeed a ripoff. Unless it includes brake pads.

I **** you not, that is what they charge. And brake pads...For years I have bought my brake pads at Midas and had them fitted at Hi-Q or Supaquick. No need for a few thousand for brake pads.

What is the difference between a normal and a major service?

The biggest cost of ANY work on the car is Labour.

Now before you start ranting about Dealers again, how are they supposed to get decent mechanics at a liveable wage, and then charge nothing for labour?

I get as angry as the next guy when I see the labour charges, but the only way around that is to do the job yourself.

OP - 4k for S&D is excessive. I charge R 2950 and it includes a full tank of petrol, carpet mats, registration and perspex number plates. Anything more than that is expensive.

No idea. Would be nice to see a actual itemised bill. Does your friend still have his bill?

The way of getting around it is to NOT service your car at a stealership, but at an independent service center, usually MUCH cheaper.

I'll try and get this.
