Subaru WRX or Audi S3

I'm getting bored of my little 1.6 polo (2006 with 85000 km) so been looking at doing a bit of an upgrade.
Maximum I've set is ~R200k for a car, so obviously looking at 2nd hand. I could go more, but see no point unless the S3 is worth it.

So obvious things to consider:
What are the running costs like?
What are the servicing costs like?
Whats the fuel consumption like between the two, I know they'll both down petrol, but which is lighter?
Fun?

I think the S3 is a lot hotter but would it end up costing me even more in the long run?
So take for example these two when considering the above questions:
S3 vs WRX?

I would of course love an sti but those are really hard to find and out of the price range. Plus i don't want to go lower than a 2005/2006 model.
I've seen a 2005 sti for around R170 k but no mention of the mileage.

I think around 100k to 120k km's is good mileage for what I'm looking at?

Wrx or sti bud? The subaru is a lot more thirsty than the audi and the ride is harder.... I'd go audi....
 
Scooby. More reliable in the long run, and you should be able to find a lower mileage WRX than an S3 at that price.
 
Ok one more important aspect I'm 23 so I don't mind a hard/sportier ride. Well fist pick would be STI but WRX is also good. I'm trying to be realistic in what I can get for that amount of money, so that's why I'm looking more at WRX.
 
I have always had a soft spot for the S3 so personally I would take the S3. However it seems that Audi have replaces BMW as the standard d00skarrejie ride.
Every time some d1ck cuts me off or rides me near off the road its an Audi. M3 drivers have become polite old grannies in comparison.

Also I really like the new scoobies... so sort of leaning towards them. Just remember that with either of these cars the owners will ride them hard and you will have to live with the consequences.
 
keep the polo :p or trade in on a new car like a cerato koup etc

or at very least know what you are getting into, bear in mind a larger fuel bill, higher maintenance costs and higher insurance premiums

I did actually look at the coup but I find it a little lacking in the performance section.
I'm not in a hurry to get rid of the polo, just keeping an eye out for the best deal. So when I see it i can pounce :)

perhaps fire off a pm to Fazda and see what kind of deals he can hook up on a scooby

dont listen to dex ...he loves the cerato koup and how can you compare that to a s3 or sti ....i love the sti just for that massive pipe and pull away noise at low revs ...

fazda should be able to help you with maintenance on the subaru and costs

audi i feel loses alot of value compare to mercs and bmws
 
Being a Scooby owner I can tell u that:

1) fuel consumption
- depends how u drive any car but the S3 FSi technology works brilliantly with decent fuel consumption and nice power.
S3 will be lighter with that said.

2) maintenance :
Ur minor service is not bad @ all. If out of motorplan there are a few reliable tuners that's fair with price.
Audi service is costly @ agents. Out of motorplan tuners as well not bad with minor services.

3) Reliability
Drive any car properly and look after it and it will last.
Service it on time with proper parts , idle and cool off (both S3 and Scoob) use correct oils etc, and both car will last.
Abuse any car and it will break.

4) performance
Both cars are 4 wheel drive (scoob awd) so traction is good.
Wrx VS S3 (both stock) S3 will be quicker having more power.
Few mods on wrx and it runs strong.

2 Different type of cars.
Scoob with stock suspension isn't ad hard as it seems, but yes S3 gives abit softer ride.
Both awesome cars and best is drive both cars once u take all the above and other info in consideration and then decide.

Personally I'd love to own S3 BUT i wont sell my Scoob to buy the S3 :)

I prefer to buy a new car than a second or even third hand car, nothing worse than having car issues (well there are a few things but not the point)

buying used you can get great bang for your buck and there are diamonds out there between the crap, you just need to find them.

buy a dud and you will see what i mean ;)

i think when wanting to buy new you should rather look for something "new" ..low mileage demo models or some guy who bought the car and just does not like it

when buying the more expensive mercs and bmws ...i feel that buying brand new is a waste cos once you leave the showroom you lose atleast 100grand

my uncle picked up a e350 sedan 09 model with 18k kms for like 150k less than new and the extras alone was worth over 150k cos it had everything

Lancer is non turbo and can't be compared to S3 and Scoob since his looking for a performance the lancer not in same category.

Mitsu Evolution 8 or 9 now u talking :D but that's double of his price range.
 
I shouldn't be answering this, as my answer might be considered as obvious...;) :p

That being said, however, I wouldn't buy either one second hand. A 200k WRX or STi has probably been driven as hard as hell, and the same goes for the Audi.

I can put you into an immaculate second hand WRX for 309 000 - just be very careful.
 
Haha of course we know what you prefer Fazda, but that's why I'm not looking at a 2010/2011 model. Looking at around 2007 ish.
I understand that it's very difficult to not driver either card hard, but it comes down to just looking for the right car.

In your experience how many WRX like I linked in my OP do you come across?
