Hi guys,

Could you guys please use this to submit to us the type of ADSL modem / router you use, i.e. name, model and how you use it, when you bought it and what the qaulity, usability is like. If you have any interesting titbits about these it would also be greatly appreciated.

This information will be collated by me into and Excel spreadsheet and mailed to the administrator of this forum so that we can have a true reflection of the general hardware and setups out there. This will facilitate probable tech support via this forum a bit easier as one can familiarise oneself with a particular model before one goes and shells out good $$$ for something, and the quirks associated with any electronic device are known before the money is spent.

Thanks guys, herbs

Netgear DG814.
July 2003
Quality and usability both excellent.
4 Port self sensing 10/100Mb hub.

Had a Planet ADE 3000 Ethernet modem that I plugged into uplink on 10/100 MB hub. Worked beautifully for a month.

ADSL refused to work, Telkom techie told me it was too sensitive, replaced it with same model, didn't work either.

Replaced it with Telkom POTS Router, didn't work, replaced it, software upgrade bombed, then new one and it is working now for 24 hours, holding thumbs.

Telkom ADSL Router Pots, connected straight to 3Com Ehternet Card.
Bought June 2003
No problems so far

Hi, same as paf (above) , although I have to reset my router every morning. Not a major problem, but can be irritating.

hi frikv, you must get Telkom to replace that modem with an upgraded one...look at the back of your Router Pots, if it doesn't have a sticker with "MOD 2", then phone tech support to log a fault to replace/upgrade that modem. Marconi modems have glitches.....no wonder they got a contract with telkom. [email protected]

Hola Seven

Netgear have DM602 and 814 modems/routers, I have used over 15 of these modems in different installations and they work perfectly. These are actually routers so they have many more features than the Telkom modem and are more stable. (They do not have to be reset every day like the Telkom modems)

Visit my web site for more info www.kustek.co.za

I am using a R800 Chronos DSL USB modem from Gazaz. You plug it in, it works.

What more could anyone ask for?

It sure beats paying R2400 for the Telkom unit.

ADSL POTS Router connected straight to 3Com Ethernet card in my server. Server have its own 3Com ethernet card to connect to my 10/100 switch.

Hi thibos, do they replace it for free? Mine don't have the mod2 sticker..... I thought it was the modem. I had the Marconi USB one before & it worked fine ....in Windows. They replaced it without questions, because it doesn't have drivers for Linux. Will contact them.
Thanx!

I am using the Netgeat ADSL DG814 modem supplied by Duxbury Networking. I got it for R1800 inclusive of VAT and it has been working like a charm since I got my ADSL about 6 months ago. It hasn't given me a days hassle and it has a 4 port hub built with DHCP, etc. Worth purchasing!!!

I am using the ADSL Ethernet modem(Alcatel).
R 2500.
No longer supplied by Telkom.

The ADSL Ethernet modem plugs into a second card on my server.

I did not use the Telkom Provided software at all, and used a generic PPOE over ethernet driver that behaves like a Dial-Up connection instead.

I am running MS Small Business Server 2000, that handles all the NAT translations + Firewall and controls the connection. The other advantage of MS SBS is that it cache's, which means that I don't have to rely on Telkom/SAIX doing this for me.

I have not had a single problem from day 1, and, when I hit the 3GB limit, I enable the modem for International ip-addresses - which is a bitch.

All in all it works well, and I have not hit the limit for 8 months.
And - now that the Telkom ADSL usage monitor is actually working, we can see what's going on with the cap, and can be careful.

I think that having a Cache before the ADSL modem helps a hell of a lot on usage, Telkom probably "charge" you for re-recieving the same stuff, even though it's from the SAIX invisible cache.

Finally - I use DNS4ME to access my computer from the Internet, which is also working very well.

May a VoidHawk's distortion field not kill you.

Std issue Marconi USB modem - Std issue software on WinXP.
So far so good.

Using an Alcatel Speed Touch Home Ethernet Modem plugged into second NIC in my linux box, using (http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/) rppoe and sharing the connection to my home network.
Works great!

God Bless & Kind Regards,

Richard :)

Hi

Telkom ADSL Router POTS, Ethernet.

Also need to reboot daily, not much of a problem for me, but I would prefer not to be using the PPPoE client on all the machines.

Any one have a simple document to set this up as a router?

Thanks

Telkom ADSL Router POTS
Smoothwall 2.0 beta5 firewall (natting, portforwarding, dynamic dns)

isp = uunet staff test account (no 3gb limit <g>)
speed test around 300 kb/sec any time day or night

Could we ask telkom some stats:

Such as how many people are on ADSL/exchange, surely this could be too difficult to do.

Maybe even a drill down type map where one could see where ADSl is available, # of current users etc.

Using new Alcatel SpeedTouch 330 USB. Beautiful modem that works well.

Bought modem for 75pounds (<R900) in UK. UK drivers have diffrenet VPI/VCI settings, so had to search the net myself to get modem to work. Telkom staff were clueless. Imagine having a line, but not having your modem work for 10 days.

Have a laptop networked to my desktop which has the USB modem connected. Both PCs surf simultaneously without need for a router. Using WindowsXP.

I used the Netgear DG814 and it worked great untill telkom messed around with my line and I couldn't use any other modem except the Telkom router pots modem which is also fine. The telkom guys had to come and do a firmware upgrade because it hanged daily.

My problem is that we don't have a choice or say in this matter!!
