Netgear have DM602 and 814 modems/routers, I have used over 15 of these modems in different installations and they work perfectly. These are actually routers so they have many more features than the Telkom modem and are more stable. (They do not have to be reset every day like the Telkom modems)

Any tips on getting the 814 to sync up? I've got the Telkom modem and that works fine. The 814 won't sync up using either the cables in the Netgear box or the Telkom supplied phone lead. The Telkom modem only works with the 2 wire lead it came with.

Problem solved with the 814 and the clue came from a Telkom support guy! The netgear router comes with a 2-wire twisted cable and a 4-wire straight through cable. Using the 4-wire cable works.

Kudos to the Telkom guy for pointing me in the right direction and he even mentioned this site as a possible source of help.

Wow,

So Telkom are monitoring this site. This is really very exciting news. Such a pity we don't have more positive thing to say about Telkom for the other viewers who are finding this site daily.

The support guy I spoke to mentioned that they had asked Duxbury for tech specs on the Netgear modems since a number of people have bought them and some have been unable to get their modems to work. In some cases the Netgear modem would work at one site, but not at another.

He said that they received no response from Duxbury.

One of the Telkom installers I spoke to said that they had received very little training on ADSL and were more or less trying to learn as they went along.
I am using a R800 Chronos DSL USB modem from Gazaz. You plug it in, it works.

What more could anyone ask for?

It sure beats paying R2400 for the Telkom unit.

Have you ever used microsofts ics with this usb modem if so could you help wit seting

I am using a D-Link DSL-200I USB Modem
Bought August 2003
Quality and usability both excellent.
The modem has never hung.
The modem also comes with a monitor displaying the upload and download capabilities of the adsl line.
When downloading the monitor shows you the speed at which data is being sent and received.

I recommend this as an entry level adsl modem as this model does not have any router functions.
D-Link has various other models locally like the DSL-300 which does have the built-in router.
The DSL-300 is Telkom approved and the DSL-200I is in the process.

The DSL-200I retails for R650
