OK so here is my question for those of you with a sub or two on the floor with a nice stretchy cloth covering the front of your sub....how do you prevent your cat from testing out his claws on the sub...?

I have seen one/two possible solutions but I would like to hear what you may have come up with..?

When I first got a cat I was around for two weeks. My then baby kitty tried scratching all kinds of stuff.
I guess that helped because I could say a definate No and on many repeated attempts I smacked gently on the butt combined with a NO. Now I can get stuff and not worry.

You could buy a catnip toy or scratch post. Have you tried cat-off spray avail from vets?

They have at least two scratch posts with quite a few catnip toys (one of the scratch posts also gets rubbed with it every now and then). So they like using them but they will still do the same to the couches when they feel like it. The cat off spray doesn't work at all as our boy just rolls around in it

Just give him a hiding - haha :) my cat scratched my iPad cover.. Now he thinks the iPad is his >:

I also have a small wooden spoon that I would point with when moaning at them ( they use to try their luck while I was cooking). So what I did when we got new couches was show them the spoon & then placed it on the one couch( moved it every now & then). I guess they did not like seeing the spoon coz they associate it with me telling them no so they stayed away from them until I removed the spoon after a few days. So I guess I have been lucky.

But then again I have very unusual cats coz they won't even climb on tables or counters, not even if there's unattended raw meat or fish.
