Subsea cables see cost cuts

Communications services provider Telkom said on Monday that continued investment in submarine cables has seen the cost per gigabit after each upgrade reduced.

There are at least nine undersea telecommunication cables (including SAT3 and Safe) that will connect various parts of sub-Saharan Africa to the rest of the world by the end of 2011, it said.

yeah, but this one they say costs have dramatically decreased

the costs per gig capacity over the concomitant period have drastically dropped

I'm just waiting when it will be passed on to the end user.

ATM the lower costs only means higher profits for the telecoms companies, nothing is passed on to the consumer, which makes the news only relevant for investors and other ISPs.

amazingly no mention of Seacom and its effect on reducing the cost of international bandwidth.
Seems as if Seacom will remain a ghost until 2011 if we lucky.

I posted this before but over in Aus after 1 xtra cable got connected followed a 66% data quota upgrade with 1 company

I believe the upgrades happened the same week the cable become live also.
