Successful people...

Successful people work smart - not necessarily hard or for themselves.

Why work hard for 8 hours a day if you can swing it in a way where you can work for only 4 to do the same thing. Then if you decide to work the other 4 your can effectively double your daily output.

Also if you don't own the business you don't necessarily have a vested interest in it's success or failure - which can be separate from your own success or failure.

What the definition of smart work? To work smart requires knowledge, intuition, experience, interaction, perseverance and focus. To achieve that requires hard work. You basically trade time for knowledge but it still hard work.

Some people are as thick as clots which keeps them from ever being successful.

See that's where you're wrong. It's often (maybe even usually) the dumb****s that get everything in life, as long as they're in the right place at the right time and by accidents of birth. Being a moron hasn't held back Miley-ray Cyrus, the Olsen twins, the Justin Bieberlake twins, Paris Hilton, Dennis Rodman, the Kardashian Krew, Malema, George Dubya Bush, Donald Trump, that Facebook kid and countless others. Meanwhile Einstein, Newton, Maxwell, Boltzmann, Brahe, Kepler, Gallileo and most of the other great minds in history died penniless and/or completely loopy.

Actual smart people that make it big are quite rare. You've basically got Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Elon Musk.

+1, just pure dumbass luck for the most and for some it's daddies influence and money.

And you can add Jobs to that long list, he was just lucky to know the right people at the right time

"Civilized people make a habit of doing what uncivilized people don't like to do."

It turns out what civilized people don't like to do is the same thing uncivilized people don't like to do, but civilized people do it anyway, because they recognize that's the price of xyz.

What?

Successful people write books on how to become successful...

There are many successful people who aren't in the limelight. And define smart? I know guys who are really bright in one area but give them something totally obscure and they are totally dumbfounded.

I think it has a lot to do with passion and drive within people that make them successful.

Have you read Jobs? I concede that he was a total douche but he saw the future where others couldn't. The same can be said about Gates, Musk, Branson et al. Same as people saying: We will never have computers driving our cars...
