Hi guys. I am a student, looking for my first car which should be something inexpensive to maintain and insure. I've got a budget of R45000. R50000 if I'm pushing it. What would you advise me to get? I was also considering scouting auctions where they sell repossessed cars, like aucor/imperial auto auctions etc. I was also thinking if that doesn't go well i could maybe get a VW Citi Golf or an Opel Corsa Lite. Please school me.

Ford maybe, as they have a model T, and you obviously need one as a sudent

More seriously, the auctions are not good places to pick up cheap cars, as the dealers basically rule the roost, and pricing isn't really worthwhile.

Better off checking facebook, gumtree etc.

True.. I used to work for WesBank and my colleague told me same about the auction.
You can go for Tata Indica if you want a safe, sturdy and low on maintenace car other option can be Hyundai Atos - the only concern is its safety.

Citigolf means cheap parts, but not the lowest fuel cost (there's other better engines out there), and high theft risk.

Take public transport, save up and get a R100k car . You will get scrap metal for R50k

With your budget I can only think of first generation Chevy sparks or kia picanto.

You can also get Daihatsu Sirion I heard that mechanical, it's same as Toyota yaris I don't know if it's true. But my first choice would be Chevy Sparks or Kia Picanto.

I disagree, he can get himself a Corsa lite with aircon and power steering, the Golf has none of those so stay away. At a push he can even get himself a Corsa C with even better specs and extra doors. Also a Hyundai Getz, which is an even better car than any of those I have mentioned.

Stay away from auction, get a car at the dealer that comes with full service history, i got my Corsa lite at R49k with 150k kms on the clock, with full service history and a cambelt just done, the first repair I had to do was the clutch when the car was well over 200k kms.

Hey guys . Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll go for the corsa Lite, it’s probably as affordable as the citi golf but safer. I’m also considering saving up some more and just getting something better.

Make sure get model with AC, was not standard across the range if I remember correctly.

See if you can't get the 1.6 sports, some are sold at the same price. In terms of safety I would say it's at the same level as the Golf, the only difference is that it's better build quality and the aircon and power assisted steering.
