Hi there

Not sure if any of you guys use SugarSync, but they've decided to do away with their free account. So now I need an alternative. I've gotten pretty used to SugarSync for various purposes and it's become my favourite cloud storage/sync/backup utility.

What I need to know is if anyone knows of a viable alternatives ? Ultimately, it should be able to:

  • Selectively Sync/backup folders from a file structure (ie not a "sent to X folder to sync" solution) I don't want two copies of my stuff all over the place nor do I want to have to move the original to another location
  • Mobile client on Android that will be able to sync/backup selective folders only to the phone
  • Auto upload photos/video from Android phone

Thanks in advance

EDIT:

I've tried, Dropbox, Google Drive, Skydrive, Mozy, Spideroak, Cubby. None of them fit the need exactly...

Dropbox ? Skydrive ? Google Drive ?

Edit: Dropbox uses the "send files to dropbox folder to sync" , but Google Drive doesn't . I don't have Skydrive installed right now, so can't check how it syncs.

I think dropbox uses the "send files to dropbox folder to sync" , but Google Drive doesn't . I don't have Skydrive installed right now, so can't check how it syncs.

Doesn't tick all the boxes. :(

Sounds to me you need a FTP/WebDAV solution, that's the only way you can sync/backup files without it being in the exact same folder structure across devices. Not sure which ones support FTP/WebDAV though, i used Amazon's storage at some point which supported all that (you would connect with a standard FTP/WebDAV client on mobile) but it sure ain't free...

It sounds like what you really want is Sugarsync. Why not get a paid plan?

It's expensive for just a basic user. I'm also in the same boat. I'm gonna try Google Drive as I just a gig of cloud space.

How did Google Drive not fit your requirements?

Dropbox with selective sync and an android app called dropsync should tick most of those boxes at least.

Yeahhhh.... Thats the problem. I'm looking for a free solution.

Well, its R200 bucks a year for me to have a cool, really redundant backup and sync solution for my personal (read: campus/unimportant) documents and the like. I had fun setting these things up and having an unnecessarily high peace of mind about data security but it isn't important enough to pay for... And finding a round

It's expensive for just a basic user. I'm also in the same boat. I'm gonna try Google Drive as I just a gig of cloud space.

For some reason, I have 15GBs on Google drive...

How did Google Drive not fit your requirements?

It has the whole "Drag your files here to sync them" and no mobile photo uploads from what I can see...

Thanks guys. These look like some really good solutions. It may work exactly as I want it to, but its something.

EDIT: This combo looks like it will work. Granted, it has to be the Pro version of dropsync and I still need to install the app from the second link, but it can do exactly what my sugarsync was set up to do.

Ah, which photos app ? The app thats actually called "Photos" ? It looked like it only uploaded to Google+... I only got it this weekend 'cause I installed a custom ROM (CM 10.1) so I shall look into it. Thanks.

The Dropbox official android client will upload your photos. It's easy enough to run as well as dropsync on your phone and maybe you'd want to anyway in case you want to access something not synced quickly.

Cx.com uses selective folders I know. Too late to check your other things. Btw they give 10JiggaBytes for fwee!

I installed Dropbox and Google Drive, gonna mess around with both to see how both perform.

Google's Photo album solution is called Picasa. The built in android gallery on your phone syncs with Picasa. If you go into "Gallery" and go into settings you'll see it can sync your photos with your google account. Google+ is basically just all these loose things integrated under one page, although going to Google+ directly you might struggled to find the Photos/Albums, so use this link:

http://www.picasaweb.google.com/

I don't use Google+ , but i do use Picasa . You even get a very nice desktop app to sync your PC photos. http://picasa.google.com/intl/en/

This is of course all seperate from Google Drive. I believe even the space is seperate. So even though you can store photos on Google Drive also, it's NOT actually the official place where Google/Android syncs photos.

Bittorrent Sync, Sparkleshare, Seafile or Owncloud. Rolling your own is fun ;)

@Dylan_G you could look at Box.com but I am afraid it also only syncs a single folder.

Have you considered using Symbolic/hard links? This should work with almost all of the services mentioned...

On Windows I think the command line function is mklink - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753194.aspx

There is also a windows shell extension which may make it a little more user friendly - http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

Make sure you understand how this will work...

If for example you create a link to a folder and you delete the folder, then the original folder will still exist. If however you delete a file within the linked folder, it will delete the file in the original folder as well. This is not an exhaustive explanation, so I suggest you do your own research to avoid data loss.

Best of luck.

Thanks man.

Yeah, I've used symbolic links on my Linux system, so I understand how they work.

I found that Dropbox+Dropsync(Mobile)+Dropbox Folder Sync(which creates Windows symbolic links)+Dropbox mobile app makes a workable combo solution.
