I need suggestions for an SUV please. Must be able to handle bad roads as I travel occasionally on bumpy and pothole roads. So for that reason safety is also a top priority. If it can be fuel efficient that would be great as it will also be used as a daily runaround. Ability to overtake decently is important as the long distance road I travel on occasionally is full of trucks. I occasionally travel with kids long distance so that is also something I need to take into consideration. Budget is R400k. New or used with low mileage. I've tried to search old threads and I see CX-5 has been suggested the most, but for me CX-5 is out, although it's a great car, I've driven it a number of times on long distance drives and that driver's seat is just too uncomfortable for me.

I was looking at the Mahindra XUV700 but I see a couple of car reviewers complaining that the auto start/stop can be problematic, I'm yet to test it myself.

I prefer to keep a car for years (11 years on my current car) so reliability is important.

Yopu can tiggo 8 pro brand new out of box R469k, then do get 10 year 1million km warranty on engine also.

Tiggo 7 goes 400k currently new.

Corolla Cross is the most sold item. I would look at the Rav4 second hand as it can be found for that, but then you must do changes to the wheel well, as it supposedly easy to be stolen via its front light. XR Spec is ideal if Corolla

Nissan has problematic gearboxes, but still many an Xtrail on the road. Older ones that is.

I would avoid all things Ford.

I see most Duster suggestions, I'll go test drive and see. I've heard a new model is coming out in March though. Maybe it will be best to wait for the new model to come out then I can get current model for less?

OP says this and then half the forum recommends soft roaders or crossovers which are glorified cars with bigger wheels and plastic bits to make them look tough.

If the roads are crap get a bakkie platform. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu.

I hear Tiggo and generally Chinese SUV's are a bit more heavy on fuel. Plus I'm one of those who are still on the fence regarding Chinese cars reliability. Although 11 years ago I took a chance with Kia when Korean cars where still doubted a lot, and it's been a blissful 11 years. But for some reason I'm a bit skeptical this time.
