My current setup is a Mikrotik hEX S RB760iGS and a Toto Link A3002RU to handle the wi-Fi.
I used to run this for a 15/5Mbps wireless internet service. Then fiber came to our little town and the max I could get from my ISP was 200/200. The setup had no issues running the network.
My network isn't as busy as it used to be, but I do like the higher speeds as I'm into mostly console gaming and a bit of pc gaming. Due to the large size of games and updates, I prefer to have the highest speed possible. The Series X only has a 1TB drive and the add on external SSD drive is stupidly expensive imo and although I do have some additional storage options available, I tend to delete a lot of games and just download should I need them again. COD is currently a 242GB download if I want to play Coldwar again.
Recently my ISP updated their offerings and I took the 500/500Mbps option. I immediately had issues ito speed. I never got the package speed. After about 2 weeks of fault reports and escalations a technician was dispatched to my house. Even after replacing several cables and some hardware, we still only got about 220Mbps down and between 330 - 400Mbps upload.
Eventually one of their boffins logged into my router and saw that apparently the cpu of the Mikrotik was maxing out. I was very surprised to hear this. The Mikrotik is the modem in my setup and I handle my ques with it. There are 16 devices in the que. The Totolink only distribute the Wi-Fi signal and does a poor job of it. Iwas thinking of replacing the Totolink with the ASUS TUF AX5400 router to handle the Wi-Fi for me and it seems that the software package is nice and I might make use of it to handles QOS as well.
The technician removed the Mikrotik out of the network and now the ToTolink was the sole modem/router. It immediately reached the 500/500Mbps speeds on all the Speed test sites, apart from MyBroadband where it only reported 76Mbps download. We from there on ignored the MyBroadband speedtest for our testing purposes.
So currently I have the TotoLink, which I don't like due to the poor Wi-Fi performance. I still would like to get the ASUS TUF AX5400. Unfortunately the ASUS is only a router.
Any suggestions for a Mikrotik or any other fiber modem to combine with ASUS that will give me basically 1Gbps speeds should I ever have the opportunity to get that service without breaking the bank too much? The other option is a single device that acts as a modem but do have Wi-Fi and routing capabilities. I would like something that has a decent QOS setup. I do like the Mikrotik way, but don't really know which board would give me what I want ito Gbps speed.
I have limited the max up and download speeds to compensate for bufferbloat and are currently sitting at 375Mbps with about 4ms difference on loaded and unloaded latency. I would however prefer that hardware that can almost guarantee close to 1Gbps up and download speeds, although I do not have access to it currently.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
