So I was one of the lucky ones who's had their appliances struck by lightning on Monday. I arrived home to find my coveted z5500 system smelling rather broken-ish, and not putting out any sound.

I am covered for it, but it seems that the 906's are a step backwards, so I'm looking for suggestions on what alternatives there are, or if I can still purchase these from somewhere?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

If you MUST have surround then I'm not sure....

However, if you can live without surround I'd definitely go for the Corsair SP2500, from all the reviews I've heard and read those things are amazing. They tend to be more suitable for desktop use though since you don't have a wireless remote. I've been wanting a pair of those since they came out and they're something like R2.5K locally, which is insanely cheap considering the almost "audiophile" like character of those things.

"Mass Effect 2's superb ambient soundtrack, coupled with its sharp combat soundscape, is tremendously immersive through the SP2500; separate sounds are properly distinguishable, and the sense of spatial placement is excellent."

"with the bass cranked right up, you feel cinematic, organ-wobbling levels of bass that simply do not distort no matter high you crank the volume."

"Run a high-bitrate recording of 'Mars: Bringer of War' from Holst's The Planets suite, and you'll hear what we mean. The heart-plucking horn sections rise with a breathtaking richness, and the crescendos are almost frightening in their intensity and richness."

Have you tried replacing the fuse? So many of these Z5500's blow their fuses quite often and it's a few rand to replace. Just a thought... good luck finding a solid replacement; those 5500's are beast :)

Z906 is the way to go. Z506 are junk. They distorted straight out of the box.

I've been reading up on the z906's and they seems pretty dissappointing, but are probably the closest thing to the 5500 atm.

I use the surround sound for movies and series etc. hence why I enjoy the multiple inupts available with the z5500, but the Corsair setup does look decent!

Regarding the fuse: I havent tried replacing that as it smelt something awful and the amp is still supplying power to the control unit, but I'll definitely give it a bash!

I have to say, be carefull what you read, as sound is VERY subjective. I know that Z 5500 was great speakers and that all audiophiles ripped it to shreds cause that it was WAY to bass heavy.
And Logitech tried to listed and tried to improve it for the Audiophiles. So what did they do, made bigger speaker and smaller sub, and what Are gamers complaining about, just that.
Some say that the Logitech should have been marketed toward gamer's not audiophiles, I disagree a bit on that fact. I think a person that buys these want Great sound not overlapped Bass, or maybe that is just me.

I have the Corsair SP2500 (2.1") speaker set and they're brilliant, but they have no digital inputs/outputs and its not a 5.1" setup.

The SP2500 can really output a total of 230W RMS: 120W for the sub and 56W for each of the satellites..
vs the Z906: Satellites: 5x 67W (RMS) per channel and Subwoofer: 165W (RMS)

The views for the Z906 aren't great like you said.

I also have to add that my soundcard's (Asus Xonar Essence STX) surround sound emulation does make a huge difference in movies with AC3 surround sound.

I hope for your sake that it is just a blown fuse. If its not, then perhaps it would be worth while trying to connect the satellite speakers to an amplifier to see if they still work :)

Z5500 is one of the best speaker systems on the market it will be difficult finding something better unless you willing to spend like 15k.If your looking for something in the same line z906 is probably your best bet.Otherwise if you don't mind a 2.1 system the corsair sp2500 got very good reviews overall.

What do you think of this ASUS XONAR DX, 7.1 sound card?
I wanted to buy the Z506, but not sure anymore.

Sybaritic has the Z506 for R800 whereas the SP2500 is R2.5k. That is over R1.6k difference.

Mine have been working like a dream. The only problem is the power button does not work on the display thingy. So i have to use the remote to turn it on.

I have that Xonar DX in my office PC. I've only used the DX to drive headphones or 2.1 speakers though and never in 5.1/7.1 setup.

The DX doesn't have a built-in amplifier, which you'll only need for high impedance headphones. It's quite difficult to tell the difference in quality between the DX and Essence STX to be quite honest and you'll need high fidelity audio equipment to do so.

The only thing that I have against the DX is its stupid floppy drive power connector. I'm using a cable-tie to keep the floppy power cable connected, because it doesn't make good contact otherwise.

If you have a speaker set and motherboard with optical input & output, then you won't really gain anything by getting that sound card (which also has optical out), except for the surround sound emulation over stereo headphones/speakers.

I bought my SP2500's for R1700 2nd-hand (which was still in mint condition).
