Tom Hicks: Fernando Torres not for sale at any price
Tom Hicks, the Liverpool co-owner, insisted yesterday that Fernando Torres would not be sold at any price amid interest from Chelsea in the Spain striker.
Although Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, Rick Parry, the club's chief executive, and Torres have dismissed talk of a move, Hicks's declaration that not even a world-record offer in excess of £50million would be enough to prise the player away from Anfield is the clearest “hands-off” warning yet to Chelsea. “There is no price at which we would consider selling Fernando Torres,” Hicks said. “The Chelsea rumours in the media are total rubbish.”
Luiz Felipe Scolari, who will take over as Chelsea manager on July 1, two days after the European Championship final he hopes to contest with Portugal, has been presented with a list of targets that includes Torres. Chelsea were always mindful that the Spaniard represents a hugely ambitious objective, but, while they were said to be hoping to exploit the divisions between Liverpool's warring owners, Hicks and George Gillett Jr, it remains to be seen whether Hicks's statement prompts a rethink and forces the West London club to look elsewhere.
Reports at the weekend suggested that “one half” of Liverpool's ownership team was prepared to sell Torres, but as long as at least one of the owners wants to keep the player signed for £20.2million from Atlético Madrid last summer, he cannot be sold. Under the terms of their takeover, Hicks requires the support of Gillett and vice versa when making such decisions, which is why Hicks has been unable to sack Parry, who retains the backing of Gillett.
Similarly, Gillett was unable to sell his 50 per cent stake in the club, despite receiving a £200million offer in February for his share from Dubai International Capital, the private equity investment arm of the Arab state, because he first had to offer it to Hicks, who has been trying - unsuccessfully - to raise the finances to buy out his estranged business partner.
Hicks, nonetheless, maintains that he will have the money in place by September to fund the creation of a new stadium in Stanley Park, adjacent to Anfield.
As deeply unpopular as Hicks is among the Liverpool supporters, they will be pleased to learn of the Texan's refusal to countenance the sale of a player who quickly established himself as a hero on Merseyside, with 33 goals in an impressive debut season.
If Torres's Liverpool future seems secure, however, the same cannot be said for John Arne Riise and Jermaine Pennant. While Riise has reluctantly accepted that his days at Anfield are numbered, with AS Roma hoping to complete the £4million transfer of the Norway defender in the coming days, Pennant is adamant that he “wishes to stay” at the club, despite speculation that the winger is surplus to requirements.
With Juventus still to lodge a firm offer for Xabi Alonso, even though one is expected imminently, the sale of Riise would help Liverpool to raise the funds to meet Aston Villa's £18million valuation of Gareth Barry, with the Merseyside club expected to make a fourth bid for the England midfield player this week.
Benítez is also hoping to bring James Milner, the Newcastle United winger, to Anfield, possibly as a replacement for Pennant, while the manager wants to raise more funds by offloading Peter Crouch, the England forward, to Portsmouth.
Liverpool have announced two friendly matches as part of their pre-season training camp in Switzerland next month. They will play FC Lucerne in the Brühl Stadium in Grenchen on July 16 before taking on Wisla Krakow at the St-Leonard Stadium in Fribourg three days later.
Aston Villa and Chelsea have agreed a £5.5 million fee for the sale of Steve Sidwell.
The former Reading midfielder is expected to complete the move to the Midlands club this week, and the development appears to open up the possibility of Gareth Barry leaving Villa Park for Liverpool.
The England international's proposed move to Anfield has stalled as the clubs struggle to agree a fee, but the news that Villa have now agreed a move for Sidwell appears to signal Barry will now leave the club.

Italian club AS Roma has officially signed Norway Defender John Arne Riise from Liverpool. The 27 year old left back has agreed to join Roma on a four-year deal after Liverpool had given them permission to discuss personal terms.
Roma announced the news on it's official club website today stating that they have agreed to pay Liverpool £4m.
Riise joined Liverpool in 2001 and went on to become a firm fans' favorite but has struggled to reclaim the form he showed previously and lost his place to Fabio Aurelio last season.
Rafael Benitez is looking to strengthen his team ahead of the upcoming season and a number of Liverpool players are rumored to be heading out of the exit door.
Riise is was one of the longest serving players of the current squad with 347 games and 31 goals spanning over a 7 year spell at the club.
+!Thanks for the service Riise. That goal against Manure will forever be remembered as a Liverpool great. Good luck with your new venture![]()

French midfielder Samir Nasri has reportedly agreed to join Arsene Wenger's Arsenal. The young midfielder is one of Europe's brightest young talents and at the age of 20 he is already being compared to Zidane.
According to BBC the Marseille midfielder has agreed personal terms with the London club and will join them on a 4 year contract after Euro 2008. This will be a massive coupe for Wenger because Nasri is wanted by just about every big European Club.
Nasri won the French League 1 Young Player of the year title last year and was also voted as Marseille's player of the year. He can play on either wing and as an attacking midfielder just behind the strikers which could mean that he will be replacing Alex Hleb who has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
CARLOS DEAL CAN KEEP RON
MANCHESTER UNITED must persuade Carlos Queiroz to stay at Old Trafford to keep Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man is on the point of quitting United to coach the Portuguese national team.
And that, according to sources in Lisbon, could be the catalyst that sends Portugal star Ronaldo to Real Madrid.
Ronaldo, 23, has refused to commit himself to United, repeatedly saying his future will be decided after Euro 2008. It is also an open secret that he wants to play for Real, one day, and that the Spanish champions will make him the highest-paid star on earth.
But if Ronaldo is wavering over his loyalty to United, the departure of fellow countryman Queiroz could tip the balance against Old Trafford.
Queiroz, Fergie’s trusted No.2, is disillusioned because he hasn’t been assured he will succeed Ferguson as United manager.
Fergie has publicly praised Queiroz, giving him much credit for his tactical and organisational input into United’s successes in the past two years.
But Queiroz is disappointed, to say the least, that the United hierarchy have not told him he will succeed Ferguson, 66, who is expected to retire before he turns 70. Starsport revealed in April that Portugal had offered Queiroz their top job, in the event of Big Phil Scolari leaving after Euro 2008.
Chelsea-bound Scolari is now on his way – and Queiroz, who is a massive influence on Ronaldo at United, likes the idea of coaching his national team.
A sticking point, and potential plus for United, is that Portugal have not offered Queiroz as good a contract as Scolari.
One move that would make Queiroz turn his back on his country is an assurance from chief executive David Gill that he will become United’s next manager.
Chelsea at odds with Frank Lampard over length of new deal
Frank Lampard’s contract talks with Chelsea have stalled over the length of the proposed deal, The Times has learnt. Chelsea’s most recent offer is for a two-year extension to his present deal that would keep him at the club until 2011, but the England player is seeking an additional four years.
Lampard is keen to stay at the club he has served with distinction for seven years and will meet Peter Kenyon, the chief executive, for contract talks after returning from holiday next week. The midfield player, who is a transfer target for Inter Milan, will also hold talks with Luiz Felipe Scolari, the new manager, when the Brazilian reports for duty at the club on July 7.
Lampard’s contract talks have been in progress for more than two years, with little sign of a breakthrough, although the club are willing to meet his wage demands by offering him parity with John Terry on £135,000 a week. However, Chelsea are reluctant to offer a lengthy deal to a player who will be 30 tomorrow.
Arsenal have unflinchingly operated a long-term policy of offering only one-year contracts to outfield players who are 30 or older, with Chelsea appearing to follow their lead. The West London club believe that they got their fingers burnt by giving Andriy Shevchenko a five-year deal when he signed from AC Milan two years ago, with the Ukraine striker a depreciating asset with no resale value, and do not want to make the same mistake.
Chelsea have pointed out to Lampard’s representatives that Michael Ballack was given a three-year contract, with an option for a further year, when he signed from Bayern Munich two years ago at the age of 29, although this logic appears to be undermined because they are preparing to give the Germany captain an extension.
Lampard is adamant that he will be capable of playing at the highest level well into his thirties because he is one of the fittest players in the Barclays Premier League. The former West Ham United midfield player has remarkable stamina and, despite having a thigh problem last season, has rarely suffered serious injuries, setting a Premier League record of 164 successive appearances between 2001 and 2005.
Lampard’s resolution to stay at Stamford Bridge was strengthened by the support the club offered after the death of his mother towards the end of last season, although Chelsea would be unwise to take such loyalty for granted. José Mourinho has made it clear that he wants to take Lampard with him to Inter, with Massimo Moratti, the Italian club’s president, revealing this week that he is their main transfer target.
Inter will await the outcome of Lampard’s contract talks before making an official bid, but the pull of being reunited with Mourinho is strong. Retaining Lampard may be Chelsea’s priority, but there is other business to tend to. They plan to offer a contract extension to Petr Cech, who has two years remaining on his existing deal, while Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Essien are also seeking improved terms.
Chelsea suffered a further blow yesterday when k aká, the Brazil midfield player, indicated that he would reject their advances to stay at Milan. Chelsea had hoped that the opportunity to work with Scolari, who took him to the 2002 World Cup finals as a 19-year-old, might have convinced him to move, but his mind appears to be made up. Furthermore, Milan have insisted that k aká is not for sale at any price, which is becoming a recurring theme for Chelsea, who were told on Tuesday that Liverpool would not countenance cashing in on Fernando Torres, the Spain forward.
“I heard about the alleged interest of Chelsea, but I have not the slightest intention to change team, unless Milan have to sell,” k aká said.
Barcelona in talks to sign Hleb
Barcelona vice-president Marc Ingla has confirmed the club are in talks to sign Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb.
The 27-year-old Belarus international has long been linked with the Spanish giants, with Inter Milan also keen.
Ingla revealed on Catalunya Radio: "Barcelona's negotiations with Hleb are still in progress.
"But despite him being a player with special qualities, if his club are not ready to sell him, we have other options in mind."
Earlier this month, Hleb's agent said the winger had met representatives from Barcelona with a view to a transfer.
"We have had talks with Barcelona but nothing has been signed," Uli Ferber told BBC Sport.
Hleb has held discussions with the Gunners, but there is now a strong possibility that he will be leaving the club this summer.
The midfielder had been linked with a move to Inter Milan but the Serie A club's appointment of Jose Mourinho appears to have ended any chance of that move.
"I'm sorry that we won't be able to take him to Italy, he liked Inter a lot but obviously Mourinho has made some different choices and has gone for some other names," said Hleb's representative Vincenzo Morabito.
Earlier in the season, it was reported that the former Stuttgart midfielder held secret talks with Inter when in the city ahead of Arsenal's Champions League game against rivals AC Milan at the San Siro.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger threatened to report Inter to football's governing body Fifa if they continued their 'illegal' pursuit of Hleb after former boss Roberto Mancini declared his interest in the player.
Hleb joined Arsenal in 2005, signing a four-year contract, after the club paid Stuttgart £11.2m for his services.

Ince set to become Blackburn boss
Paul Ince is set to named as the new manager of Blackburn Rovers, according to BBC Radio 5 Live.
The MK Dons boss is Rovers' number one target following Mark Hughes' departure, despite Sam Allardyce being interviewed for the role.
Former England and Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren has also been linked with a move to Ewood Park.
Rovers chairman John Williams has stated that he expects an announcement to be made by the end of this week.
Paul Ince is set to be named as the new manager of Blackburn Rovers, according to BBC Radio 5 Live.
"The former England captain has always been a target of Blackburn and the MK Dons are expecting the situation to be resolved in the next few days," said BBC Radio 5 Live reporter Juliette Ferrington.
"That would tie in with the bookies, who in the last 24 hours, have made Ince firm favourite to succeed Hughes.
"Sam Allardyce has also been interviewed for the job but I understand he is likely to miss out in favour of Ince."
Six candidates have been interviewed to succeed Hughes, who left Rovers for Manchester City on 5 June, with Ince, McClaren and former Bolton and Newcastle manager Allardyce regarded as the leading candidates.
McClaren has been out of work since he was sacked by England in November after they failed to qualify for Euro 2008 and he told Radio 5 Live on 7 June that he would be interested in the Blackburn job.
Ince has had an impressive season with MK Dons after moving from Macclesfield in June last year.
The 40-year-old former West Ham, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Liverpool midfielder led MK Dons to the League Two title as well as the Football League Trophy in his first season with the club.
His achievements attracted the interest of Leicester City, who made an official approach to the MK Dons for Ince's services earlier this month.
Blackburn would need special dispensation to appoint Ince as he does not yet have the Uefa Pro Licence coaching qualification.
Uefa and Premier League rules require anyone wishing to manage in the top flight to hold the Uefa Pro Licence, which requires 240 hours of study and usually takes a year to gain.
The Premier League could block his appointment although Gareth Southgate got the green light to manage Middlesbrough two years ago without being licensed.
And League Managers' Association chief executive Richard Bevan insists he will not lobby against Ince's appointment.
I Want Deco, Lampard And Drogba - Mourinho
The ‘Special one’, who won major titles with the Chelsea duo and a Champions League with Deco, insists that he would like to be re-united with those players as he continues to strengthen the Nerazzurri.
Reports have been rife over the club’s penchant for all three players and Mourinho has confirmed his side may continue to try and bring them to Milan.
“I am not nostalgic but I really like those three players, they helped me win some great titles,” Mourinho told ESPN.
“I cannot forget Deco, Lampard and Drogba. These are players who I could never say no to.
“I would love to work with them again in future but I am not too obsessed with this idea.
“I don’t know which of the three will leave their clubs but we’ll see.”
Mourinho also spoke about Adriano. The Brazilian hit-man has returned to Inter and is looking forward to a revival and the coach admits that he will give Adriano another chance.
“Adriano? I am really curious about him,” said the coach.
“He is a great player and I like him a lot. He is still young and he can recover for the lost time.
“I want to talk with him and tell him what I think and I’ll see what he is thinking also.”
Inter president Massimo Moratti has recently stated the club’s desire to bring in Frank Lampard from Chelsea and it might just happen following Mourinho’s call.
