Ronaldo Shocker: Blatter Is Right

Cristiano Ronaldo is said to have told Portuguese station TVI that he agrees with Sepp Blatter's comments regarding the treatment of modern footballers, adding that he has not yet come to an agreement with Real Madrid...

The winger is reported to have said that he agrees with FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who earlier controversially claimed that footballers were treated as modern day slaves, adding that Ronaldo should be allowed to leave if it is his personal desire.

The full TVI interview in which Ronaldo made this declaration, along with his desire to play for Real Madrid, was aired on Thursday evening during the 21:00 CET bulletin.

Update: The interview was broadcast at 21:28 local time.

The Manchester United ace said, "I am optimistic - things have been going well, I have been undergoing treatments, everything is going ok.

"I have been progressing well, I am now focused on recovery.

"I will be back in 10-12 weeks. Training with the ball? That will start in around two months."

Talk moved towards the player's future.

"I am optimistic and tranquil about what's to come," he said.

"Blatter's comments? I agree with him. I have nothing else to say about that. What he (Blatter) said is correct.

"Have I already made a deal with Real Madrid? No - that's not true. There is no deal.

"I hope that my future will be decided as soon as possible but I do not know where I will start the season."

In conclusion he discussed Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz's chances of becoming Portugal manager.

"He is a great coach and would be a great solution for the Portugal squad," said Cristiano. "He'd be a great bet."

Deal Or No Deal

Meanwhile, Madrid-based sports daily As claims that Ronaldo himself is confident that his move to the Spanish capital will be completed sooner rather than later.

Apparently Ronaldo sought to allay the blancos' fears that his ankle operation and plans to return to Manchester would see to it that a move is in jeopardy.

The paper states that the player has communicated to Madrid his thoughts via his agent, Jorge Mendes, and an SMS text message. Translated, the text read: "Relax: I've taken care of everything."

Fowler makes shock Blackburn move

Robbie Fowler has signed for Blackburn after rejecting a pay-as-you-play deal from Cardiff.

The 33-year-old ex-England striker was expected to sign a new one-year deal at the Bluebirds but told the club on Thursday he would be joining Rovers.

He has not played since mid-December because of a hip injury that required surgery in the United States.

The move will reunite Fowler with new Blackburn manager Paul Ince - an old friend since their time at Anfield.

Fowler scored six goals in 16 games in an injury-hit season at Ninian Park after joining Cardiff from Liverpool in 2007.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale was philosophical about Fowler's decision and told BBC Radio Wales: "We signed him last year with a year's option but at this stage in his career it's understandable that he accepts an offer to go to the Premier League.

"We have to thank Robbie and move on, he goes with our best wishes.

"His image rights were important to us last year but now we're looking at what he could do on the field.

"Robbie's move frees up budget for us to look for another striker.

"We're pretty close to signing a new striker in a deal that I've been working on all week. When that is done we will look for another front man to take Robbie's place."

Fowler made his Liverpool debut as an 18-year-old in 1993, scoring 171 goals in 330 games before joining Leeds for £11m in 2001 and then Manchester City for £6m in 2003.

He returned for a second spell at Anfield in January 2006, although his starting appearances were limited.

Robbie is quite a legend, but he's been past his best for years now. Strange signing by Blackburn.

Signing for them means he gets back in the EPL.Will be good to see him back in the EPL but like you said his long past his best.

Yeah, I'm sure he's happy. :) Playing in the Premier League, earning a better salary (probably), but whether or not he can actually perform remains to be seen. Good luck to him though.

I'm sure he'll bring a lot of valuable experience to some of the younger squad members.

Queiroz takes Portugal coach post
Manchester United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as the new coach of Portugal.

The 55-year-old, who had a previous spell in charge of Portugal in the 1990s, has signed a four-year contract to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari.

"I'm very proud and honoured to go back to serve my country," said Queiroz.

His decision leaves United boss Sir Alex Ferguson without an assistant with just five weeks to go before the start of the new Premier League season.

Former United stars Mike Phelan and Brian McClair are already on the coaching staff at Old Trafford, as is Dutchman Rene Meulensteen, and they could take on extra responsibility in the short-term

Other candidates include Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc, the former France defender who spent two seasons with United at the end of his career, and Benfica boss Pako Ayesteran.

The loss of Queiroz could also have implications for the ongoing transfer saga surrounding the unsettled Cristiano Ronaldo, with the two sharing a close relationship.

Ronaldo told Portuguese broadcaster RTP that he fully supported Portugal's decision to appoint Queiroz.

"He is a perfect choice. I have been working with him for some time and I just have to say that he is very good for this job," he said.

Although disappointed to see Queiroz leave the club, Ferguson was also full of praise for his former assistant.

"Carlos is one of the best coaches in world football," Ferguson told United's official website.

"His attention to detail, ability to innovate and will to win have been a key factor to the team's recent successes.

"He has played an important role in building and blending the exceptional squad of players at the club."

Queiroz's deal with Portugal's Football Federation (FPF) is believed to be worth around £1.5m.

"This is a very special position that any professional would want," he said.

"The first big objective is to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa (in 2010) and I also want to thank United for the agreement reached, which made my return to Portugal possible."

FPF president Gilbert Madail said that Queiroz was his first choice for the post after Scolari departed for Chelsea at the end of Euro 2008 after five-and-a-half years in charge.

Queiroz has also previously managed Real Madrid, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

He has had two spells with United, first coming to Old Trafford in the summer of 2002.

He then spent an unsuccessful year in charge of Madrid before rejoining United on a one-year rolling contract in 2004.

Barry on the way as deal is done

barryhome.jpegGareth Barry will bid a bitter farewell to Villa next week just as American keeper Brad Guzan arrives in Martin O’Neill’s changing squad.

Barry’s disputed exit to Liverpool is now just days away after the Anfield club finally struck a deal over the methods of payment in what will be a record sale for Villa.

Liverpool are paying around £15m in cash and throwing right-back Steve Finnan into the pot as well and that will go ahead within 72 hours now that Villa have agreed a time scale of staggered cash payments from Anfield.

That closing act of an angry farewell will coincide with 23-year-old Guzan being recruited for about £1m to fill one of Villa’s two goalkeeping vacancies .

O’Neill believes he has recruited the next big American goalkeeping talent heading for a major career in Europe in the footsteps of Kasey Keller, Brad Friedel and Tim Howard.

And the transfer will complete a meteoric rise for the 6ft 4in keeper who was an unknown on the US football scene less than three years ago but is now considered the best of their coveted group of stoppers.

Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara, a part-owner of Guzan’s Chivas MLS team Guzan is leaving has confirmed a deal has been struck and although he would not name the buying club the leak of the story flushed out confirmation from Villa Park today.

Vergera said: “He’s leaving for Europe, to England specifically, and we’re very happy and very glad that another Chivas player is going to Europe.”

Guzan, frustrated by red tape over his work permit when he tried to sign for Villa in January, says: “It’s been absolutely unbelievable.”

Agent Confirms United's Berba Interest
Though their transfer activity is expected to be limited this summer, Premier-Champions League double winners Manchester United are reported to be in the market for a striker of a more physically demanding presence than their current pairing of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez in order to add another dimension to their attacking options.

Berbatov has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford since last summer, but eventually opted to stay on at White Hart Lane; faith which was repaid with Carling Cup triumph in which they thrashed Arsenal and then dramatically overcame Chelsea.

However, exit rumours persist and this time, Barcelona have even been linked with the Bulgarian as Spurs continue to brace themselves for a possible exit and are being linked with possible replacements.

Speculation has largely been through the press and little more until now, with Berbatov's agent confirming that Manchester United are interested in signing the 27-year-old.

"I know for certain Manchester United have shown interest in signing Dimitar Berbatov," Danchev told Darik radio. "But I'm not entitled to make any more comments."

Barca wait on Ronaldinho decision

Ronaldinho is expected to decide his future in the next 72 hours after discussions with Barcelona.

Manchester City appear favourites to sign him from the Nou Camp outfit after reportedly tabling a £25.5m bid, while AC Milan are also in the hunt.

Barcelona said: "The two sides agreed to allow two or three days to finalise the player's move to one of the clubs interested in landing the Brazilian."

If no deal is tied up in that time he will resume training with Barca.

Earlier, the Spanish club's president Joan Laporta told Catalunya Radio: "Ronaldinho and his agent have two interesting proposals and they are leaning more towards the one from City."

However, BBC Sport understands that AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani is in Barcelona to attempt to convince Ronaldinho to choose the San Siro over the City of Manchester stadium.

The two-time Fifa World Player of the Year was not present on Monday morning to start pre-season fitness tests under new Barca coach Pep Guardiola, leading to speculation that talks about his future were set to take place with Milan.

His time at the Spanish giants effectively came to an end in June when Guardiola announced the playmaker was surplus to requirements.

Nevertheless, the Catalans were not prepared to release Ronaldinho to join Dunga's Brazil squad for next month's Beijing Olympics.

Ronaldinho helped the Nou Camp club win back-to-back Spanish league titles (2004-05, 2005-06) and the Champions League in 2006, but failed to cement a regular place in the starting XI last season because of injury and fitness issues.

O'Neill: Gunners In For Barry

Rumours have arisen that the Gunners are preparing to swoop on the soon to be ex-Villa skipper, whose hopes of moving to Liverpool appear to be fading fast given recent developments.

The Reds have failed to meet Villa’s ₤18million asking price and are unlikely to go any higher than ₤15million, especially now that Juventus have dropped their interest in Xabi Alonso.

It has been speculated that Arsene Wenger, who is on the lookout for a top-notch central midfielder, may use the lull in negotiations to snap up Barry from under Benitez’s nose.

And O’Neill confirmed those suspicions last night, revealing that the Gunners have in fact made an enquiry into the England international’s availability .

Speaking to The Sun, the Ulsterman said: “Myself and Steve Walford both know Arsene Wenger’s assistant Pat Rice.

“He phoned Steve to ask how the Liverpool thing had gone and said that they might show an interest.

“At the end of the conversation Arsenal said ‘that’s fine’ and that they’ll let us know. That is exactly what happened.”

Barry is in a spot of bother. If Alonso stays then it's very unlikely Liverpool will still go for Barry. Leaving marooned with a manager who he's no longer on very good terms with to say the least. :o
