Barcelona To Step Up Benzema Quest
The Blaugrana are still searching for a new forward to bolster their squad and Sport believe that a deal that could see Samuel Eto'o go in the opposite direction is on the table.
Emmanuel Adebayor has been given a valuation by Arsenal that the Catalan outfit find unrealistic, while Didier Drogba's goalscoring record is not as high as the club would like.
Dimitar Berbatov is still an option, but following reports at the weekend in Sport, they now believe that contact will be made again with Lyon to test the waters.
Economically, Barça may be asked for as much as Arsenal want for Adebayor, but given that Benzema is just 21 the price tag will not put them off.
Madrid are said to be monitoring the situation for a player that has said in the past that he would like to play for either of the two great rivals in the Spanish league.
But Benzema's agent, Karim Djazriri, and Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas have both insisted that Benzema wanted to spend at least one more season at the French side.
Eto'o would likely refuse to move to Stade Gerland with far more lucrative offers on the cards from England and Italy and the striker may yet insist on staying at Camp Nou.
His encouraging performances in Scotland may have led coach Pep Guardiola to change his mind about the urgency of signing a new goalscorer, even if Begiristain will continue to push for his exit.
Liverpool close in on Keane deal
Liverpool are expected to complete the £18m signing of striker Robbie Keane from Tottenham within 24 hours.
He underwent a medical on Monday and may be able to fly to Spain with the Liverpool squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Villarreal.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez completed the final stages of his negotiations with the 28-year-old over the weekend.
The Republic of Ireland star is expected to sign a five-year deal worth about £80,000 per week.
As a child growing up in Dublin, Keane was an avid supporter of the men from Anfield - and Liverpool will now become his sixth club after spells at Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan and Leeds, before his switch to Tottenham in 2002 for £7m.
Keane had become Benitez's number one summer target over recent weeks, with the need to replace Peter Crouch, who joined Portsmouth earlier this month, seemingly more important than pursuing the complicated and protracted move for Aston Villa's 27-year-old midfielder Gareth Barry.
With the prospect of Xabi Alonso now remaining at Anfield, Liverpool may now decline to respond to Villa manager Martin O'Neill's demand that they make their intentions regarding Barry clear.
Liverpool's response is that Villa have turned down four bids for Barry and the Merseysiders are not prepared to pay £18m for the England international.
Benitez will now be unwilling to allow full-back Steve Finnan, a possible makeweight in a deal for Barry, to leave the club.
That is because new signing Philipp Degen is expected to need surgery on a groin injury that will rule him out of the start of the season.
There is also the likelihood that Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa could return to his home country for £6m in the coming weeks, having expressed such a desire for personal reasons.
All such problems will be put aside by Benitez when he is able to unveil Keane - who married Irish model Claudine Palmer in June - as the new strike partner for Fernando Torres.
Torres cost Liverpool £20.2m when they bought him 12 months ago, and their current second biggest signing is Javier Mascherano, who cost £17m when the deal finally went through in February this year.
The arrival of Keane will take Liverpool's spending to about £32m since the end of last season. They have already drafted in Degen, fellow full-back Andrea Dossena, goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri and teenagers David Ngog and Emmanuel Mendy.
About £20m has been raised by selling Crouch, John Arne Riise, Scott Carson and Danny Guthrie.
I reported that story on saturday already
Will be a brilliant signing for us![]()
Guess im slow this weeklol
Ya will be good if he finaly signs as its been dragging on for a bit now.
Sorry I meant on my website, didn't actualy post it in this thread
the BBC is a much more reliable source than safootball fans but it feels good to know that I beat them to the story
I'm finally starting to get optomistic now. We just need to scrap the barry deal and sign a top class winger then we will be ready to mount a serious title challenge
Didnt think it was relevant. The rest of the interview was about Christiano Ronaldo.
Point is the guy sounds like he would be happy to play for madrid...but according to you he only has eyes for Barca. I'd rather go with Fabregas' word over yours Nivek.
Maybe sasportswhatever should work on their own stories instead of recycling, and cutting and pasting from other news sites... maybe then it'll be a tad more reputable than tribalfootballCesc: It's All Lies!
Cesc Fabregas has accused certain sections of the Spanish press of creating stories about him out of thin air.
"I have not spoken to any media so it's frustrating to read quotes that I have supposedly said about my future," said the top-rated Spanish midfielder to Sky Sports News.
"I have spent the summer relaxing with my family, friends and girlfriend and I return to training with Arsenal tomorrow (Tuesday).
"I think that some people are just trying to make mischief but my intentions are very clear.
"I am happy here at Arsenal, my future is with Arsenal and the priority is to achieve success and win trophies at Arsenal."
Skysports usually pickup the stories pretty late after they made the rounds on the other sites/papers.
Probably cos they verify their stories firstthe difference between a news site and a tabloid...
What would you consider tribalfootball?
yeah but the point anyway is you get sites that will report anything and everything, and then you get those that verify their stuff, ie the ones merc posted on the previous page...
obviously the ones with no reputation to up hold will just report anything

Liverpool have completed the transfer of Tottenham Hotspur Striker Robbie Keane after the club confirmed that the Irish Striker has signed a 4 year deal.
Keane was on Merseyside today to complete his medical and will now become the club's fifth summer addition to Rafa Benitez's first-team squad after the arrival ofDavid Ngog, Diego Cavalieri, Phillipp Degen and Andrea Dossena.
Liverpool have been chasing the striker for a while now and last month Rafael Benitez revealed that Keane is one of his main summer transfer targets.
The club released a this statement on their official wenbsite:
"Robbie Keane has tonight put pen to paper on a four year deal at Liverpool Football Club.
Fourteen years after turning down the club he grew up supporting in favour of Wolves, the Republic of Ireland captain finally completed a dream move following a medical at Melwood. "
Benitez is believed to have finalised the Keane deal on Friday, which could rise to £20m if Liverpool win either the Premier League or Champions League during his time at Anfield. The Republic of Ireland striker, 28, will sign for his boyhood favorites more than a decade after turning down the chance to join Liverpool when he left Crumlin United in Dublin to start his career in England.
It became clear he would be leaving when Tottenham boss Juande Ramos did not even name him among the substitutes for Thursday night's friendly against Hercules in Spain.
He also refused to discuss the Keane situation afterwards. Benitez, however, is not giving up the chase for Barry - who was abused by angry Villa fans when he played for the reserves against Walsall in midweek - and still hopes to raise the money by selling players or persuading the club to release more funds.
Exactly, everyone was running that story and I read the same thing on the way to work in the morning paper.
