Summer Transfers

Reds urge Barry to hand in request
Gareth Barry could hand in a transfer request in an effort to force through a move to Liverpool, despite Aston Villa saying the deal is dead.

The England midfielder has yet to formally request a move - despite telling the media that he wants to play for Liverpool - because it would see him lose a loyalty bonus.

But reports have now suggested that the Reds will encourage Barry to hand in a transfer request to try and force Villa to accept an offer despite the passing of a deadline.

Although Villa have declared the deal dead after Liverpool failed to come up with the funds by 5pm on Wednesday - with suggestions that the Reds missed the deadline by 15-20 minutes...:D - there is cynicism that the saga is over.

The Daily Mail is still sticking by their Wednesday afternoon exclusive that Liverpool have come up with a £19million deal that involves Steve Finnan moving the other way and claim that the deal will go through on Thursday.

This despite Martin O'Neill declaring: "Naturally we're all absolutely delighted that Gareth will be staying at Villa Park and relieved to find a resolution and closure to the saga.

"We had a very positive meeting on Monday when it was agreed between Gareth, his agent [Alex Black], Mr [Randy] Lerner [the chairman] and myself that a deadline should be communicated to Liverpool to finally resolve the situation.

"Liverpool were informed and that deadline came and passed. Now we can all look forward to the coming season with relief, anticipation and ambition."

The plot thickens....

Zenit: Arshavin To Spurs Within Days

Arshavin’s agent, Dennis Lachter had yesterday claimed that a deal that would take the Russian playmaker to White Hart Lane is on the verge of being completed, but is being held up by Zenit St Petersburg, who are seeking the highest possible price for the Euro 2008 standout.

Now, the Russian side have given the strongest indication yet that a move for their star player is on the horizon.

"We have certain contacts with Tottenham, but when they will conclude, I still do not know," Konstantin Sarsaniya, a spokesman for the club, was quoted a saying in sports.ru

"Maybe within five days, maybe sooner, maybe later.

"Tottenham have an interest in the player, and I understand that the player has an interest in the club too."

Spurs are believed to have already agreed a fee with Spartak Moscow for Arsahavin's Russian international team-mate Roman Pavlyuchenko, with discussions with the player and his agent set to resume shortly.

Modric,Dos Santos,Bentley,Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko!
Spurs really mean business. Out spending the "Big four"
If they can hold on to Berbatov they will have a menacing attack line.

Why on Earth would United want to buy more players when they already have a winning combination? The logic behind that is rather fuzzy. No need for United to buy any players now. What ever happened to consistency?

You dont get it. I think we can agree that United didnt win the CL by a walk in the park. The league as well. They trailed for most of the season.

It was tough. If they field the exact same team. It will be easier for Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea to play them. United will have nothing new to bring to the game.

Last season they signed Nani and Anderson - poor players but new players.

You cant have the same team run out every season - that would mean that the Springbok should play the 15 men that won the Rugby World Cup for every game - cos they are a winning combination.

It doesnt work like that.

No one wins any competition by a walk in the park. It's always hard.

Poor players? Wow. Scary assumption.

And yes, most of the rugby team is the same. Perhaps one change for each match but it's hardly a new team on the field for every match. Come on now.

I did not say use the same players every season. I said we don't need to buy any players for this season.

Ya, Nani and Anderson are poor player when compared to kids their age that are at the same level.

Anyways, goodluck for the season. As i stated previously - no club in history has ever not bought players in the transfer market.

I compare them to

Fabregas
Pato
Messi
Bojan
Nasri

They are nowhere near these kids. Nani and Anderson are older them as well.

Yep, every club needs new blood coming in.As injury, players leaving, poor performance can easily result in the team not having enough players to get through the seaon on winning form.
Its getting close to the end of the transfer window so I think we will see some purchases coming from Manchester pretty soon.

Well If Nani played every match, who knows how good he would be ATM?
Anderson has received praise from all.
Messi is brilliant. I don't deny that. But then again, so is Ronaldo.
Don't know much about the last two.

Bojan is rated as the next Raul. Made the Spanish team that won the Euro2008 at aged 16 but declined.

Nasri is tipped to be the next Henry. Very young midfielder from France. Arsenal signed him.

Both players are already very established at their clubs and start every match.

Nani and Anderson doenst compare to them.

ronaldo is older than messi,
Nani stats are pathetic:
Games : 26
Goals : 3
Penalties : 0
Yellow Cards : 2
Red Cards : 1
Minutes Played : 1565

Since when is age a factor? Gosh, you're being desperate now. What are they like a few years apart?

26 games? Hardly a fact since he never almost gets a full game. It's always 20 minutes at a time and then he either gets subbed or he comes on for 10 or 20 minutes at the end, cos stupid Fergy wants to play Giggs all the time. I'd like Nani to get more exposure. Once he is a first team regular, then and only then can we judge him. Look how long it took for Ronaldo to become the star he now is. Success doesn't happen overnight.

Messi has achieved more than Ronaldo and is far younger so age is a big factor. For anyone so young to achieve that much is amazing.

1565 minutes is hardly 10 minutes here and there. of those 26 games he started most.

More than Ronaldo? Please show me this.

Yes, when you tally up the minutes it makes it look bad. Why don't you convert it seconds while you're at it. I'm sure that will make your argument stronger. Nani gets 10 or 20 minutes, then gets taken off because Fergy loves Giggs. It doesn't matter how many games you start. It's how many full games you play. Age has nothing to do with it, especially since they are only a few years apart. It's not like Ronaldo is 30.

1565 minutes / 26 games = 60 minutes per game on average. :p

I still think he's good and has lots of potential to get better, regardless of the fact that he's 26.

Adding awards from the UK is stupid as his a english player you need judge them at international level. The UK gives out the most personal awards of any other league, look at the PFA award for example.

Messi outside of having won a treble with Barca at 19 and a under 20 world cup, here are a list of his International awards so far:
Golden Ball: FIFA U-20 World Cup: 2005
Golden Boot: FIFA U-20 World Cup: 2005
Bravo Award: 2007
World Soccer Young Player of the Year: 2006, 2007

Copa America Best Young Player: 2007
France Football Player of the Year:

FIFA World Player of the Year:
o 2nd place: 2007[50]
SI Latino's 2007 Sportsman of the Year: 2007
Ronaldo international awards:
Portuguese Sports Personality of the Year: 2006
Portuguese Footballer of the Year: 2006-2007
UEFA Champions League Top Scorer: 2007-2008
U-21 European Footballer of the Year - Bravo Award: 2004
European Footballer of the Year - Ballon d'Or:
o 2nd place: 2007
Onze d'Or
o 2nd place: 2007
FIFA World Player of the Year (behind messi)
o 3rd place: 2007
World Soccer Player of the Year
o 3rd place: 2007 (behind messi)
FIFPro Special Young Player of the Year: 2005, 2006

And this is from someone who is younger than ronaldo, imagine the amount of awards he will have when he turns 23.
