Hi,

I was thinking maybe we users could get together and sponsor a full page advert in the Sunday News Paper complaining how TELKOM misled their customers. We could each put R 10 or so. Im sure this would have effect on TELKOM.

What do you guys think?
 
Where do I send my R10? Which paper will it be?

I think that since Jerrek is Canadian, he can sponser a full page by himself ... will prolly only cost him $1.00 :p

I was talking in the same direction previously.

ANOTHER IDEA: Certainly Telkom can rather use some little bit of cash (for them it would be free anyway) to better our service than trying to scare us off or fight us.

Personally i think R10 would not get you anywhere, but this adsl will cost us so much for nothing in the long run that we might as well commit.

How about all of us writing letters to our local newspapers?

A coordinated barrage across the country is sure to attract some attention.

I am also hoping it will attract many more members to this forum.
 
How about raising funds to take the govt to court!

Silly - mabey not - the Govt gazette dated 24 May 2002 clearly states:

So our esteemed Minsiter of Silence fell short of her own deadlines.

Telkom is being protected @ a political level - therefore it requires political action - does anyone know who the DP representative for communications is?

Sounds nice in theory, but it's not quite the same as writing a reader's letter in a newspaper, I don't think.
I suspect there might be a possibilty that Telkom could take you to court over that. Along the lines of willful damage to their reputation. Are there any lawyers out there? Where the hell are the lawyers when you need them?

I truly appreciate the initiative. This site is a site for ADSL users and therefore any member has the right to propose actions and use this forum to gain opinions. I do think Paf has a point about the legality of such actions. I truly wish a few lawyers will get ADSL and join our forum. It will be great to have some expert advice.

Having said this, I think the basic concept is good. We have to investigate all avenues to get our point across. I have given yesterday’s meeting a great deal of thought, and it is simply unacceptable to shrug us off as a small bunch of disgruntled users making life tough for the rest. They made it clear that their initial intention was not to respond to us at all, but we all know why they had to respond, although they deny this. If they continue to treat us without any respect, there is a great deal more where the previous lot came from. We have triple the amount of members now, and growing fast. They have to acknowledge our legitimacy, and I think it is simply short sighted from them to drag out the process. I personally think they anticipate that we will simply lose steam and accept this service as it is. It is great to see that you guys are becoming more involved after the meeting. They will definitely notice this!

While I may not be a lawyer I do know this :

If you put out a ad that states Telkom is doing this and that Telkom are within there rights to challenge your statement and if you cannot proove the statement in a court you may be liable for damages to reputation and loss of income plus legal fees.

However there isn't anything wrong with putting up ad to advertise the existence of a forum that allows users to voice thier opinions (negative or positive), as long as you don't imply the forum is for challenging Telkoms alleged badservice and monopolistic methods.

Something on the lines of :

"Got ADSL? Visit us at www.myadsl.co.za and join other ADSL users in a forum. Voice your opinion about your ADSL service, get advise from other users and discuss aspects of ADSL in South Africa."
 
I like the idea ASnogarD. Let's at least get more publicity for the site. Can someone found out what a good sized advert in a national paper would cost?
 
Perfectly true and valid.

This is not America where you can say what you like about someone or something. But the advert you suggested would be perfect!

Lets get more support for the site.
 
So RPM what do you think about an advert like this? Hell, I'm willing to donate R200. I think we should do this asap. Any lawyers out there to give some advice on the content of such an advert?
 
I think the ad should be something like ASnogarD described above....
I am so pissed off at Telkom after RPM's meeting I'm ready for some drastic measures!
 
If we dont mention TELKOM in the advert, how can the accuse us of tarnishing their image without proof.

e.g. The communication provider which recently rolled out ADSL has misled their clients because X Y Z reasons etc.

No where did we mention TELKOM. Could they take action on us if we placed an advert like that?

Thanks again for the initiative and excellent ideas. I am all for promoting the site and getting more ADSL users together. I will also be willing to contribute to such a fund. Unfortunately I can not ask users for any money. I promised them this will stay a free site and to be hassled for a few bucks might just drive away some members.

Having said this, you guys are welcome to drive such an initiative and use this forum to promote it. This is what this forum is for. I truly mean it when I say that this forum and site belongs to the users. Up to now I drove most of the initiatives, which is only natural. Somebody must be responsible for contacting the media and corresponding with Telkom and other organizations. It will be great to see many initiatives headed by different members. This forum and site serves the purpose of a communal, independent meeting place from where such initiatives can be launched.

Just a short note about any initiatives involving finances. How will we provide security against possible scams on this forum? When people see that members are willing to donate to certain initiatives, it is only a matter of time before somebody takes advantage of this to get some easy money from us. The obvious solution is that a certain person/business is responsible for all finances on this site, and I think if members are considering action where finances are needed that we must nominate such a person/business. I know that it all becomes rather complicated quickly, but I never want anybody to lose a cent from visiting this site. That is why I want to keep it free. It must stay a safe and open environment where users can communicate freely.

Please give your views and concerns regarding these matters.

Hey lawyers no offense. I have one myself. I just couldn't resist that. I think we all need some cheering up.
 
We can open a business banking account for myadsl. The site founder should be incharge of all the funds. In that way users should only send funds into Myadsl account and nowhere else. If anyone puts and other banking details or ask for payment (scams) they should be banned.

What you guys think?

Actually the founding member and one or two other members should have combined signatory rights for such an account. In that way no funds can be used without at least 2 signatures.

Much safer that way.
 
1) An advert for myadsl is a great idea. We don't have to mention Telkom in the advert at all. We can just draw more users to the site and they can learn more about Telkom's practises on the site. The advert could go something like "Have an opinion on ADSL and other broadband connections in South Africa? Visit www.myadsl.co.za"

2) Contributing towards an advert does not mean the site has to make any profit at all. The funds will come from the members pockets. Someone (or more than one person) must be nominated to manage the funds. Preferably a moderator or someone who is a regular poster. We can outline all deposits & spending in a simple spreadsheet which anyone should be able to download
