Singer, activist and writer Sunette Bridges and 7de Laan actress Vinette Ebrahim (Charmaine) made sure the first weekend of 2015 would be a memorable one. On Friday 2 January, the two ladies got involved in a nasty argument over race on Facebook, and it didn’t end well for Vinette.
The whole drama started when Sunette shared a post on her Facebook page in which she addressed the total murders in 2014 of white South Africans. “While the whole world is Celebrating the start of a brand new year I would like you to spare a thought for the families of the 217 White South Africans who were butchered by Black Savages in 2014. 213 White South Africans were murdered by Black attackers in 2013 and, 3 hours into 2015 they claimed another victim…” Sunette wrote. The statement was followed by a list of all those murdered.
While the majority of readers praised Sunette for highlighting this highly controversial issue, there were also a number of followers who blasted her for making blatant racist remarks. But it was only when Vinette joined the conversation that things got out of hand.
Vinette was met with great anger when she noted that it’s not only white South Africans being murdered – all races are affected by violent crime. And then Vinette made the following comment, prompting Sunette followers to call Vinette everything from a H****t, M**d and ‘papsaksuiper’.
“Yes, I do do struggle in Afrikaans, it’s an adopted tongue. So please allow me to insult you in my mother tongue. You speak so eloquently about genocide not necessarily being the mass killing of a nation. The possible slow, planned obliteration of said nation on all fronts: socially, politically, economically etc. Well, how does it feel Sunette Bridges to be wearing the shoe that my people wore for so long? How does it feel to be the downtrodden minority? How does it feel to be in fear for your life on a daily basis? How does it feel to be a second class citizen in the land of your birth? The only difference here is that you will never see freedom as you knew it again. You have made it impossible for yourself and those like you. Racists. Face the fact, “baasskap” has disappeared never to be re-emerge again. You are an opportunist and a fearmonger and you exploit the undereducated Afrikaner. You and Steve Hofmeyr. Your little boeremag enclave is exactly that…little. But I will be watching you with keen interest because I believe that you are a parasite with an agenda.”
The comment along with the racial slurs have subsequently been deleted by Sunette.
On Saturday, Sunette took to Twitter once more to address the way weekend newspapers approached the story, claiming there was clear favouritism towards Vinette despite her strong remarks. “Vinette’s hurtful comments regarding the murder of whites is nothing new to me. She has done this before on my news page and for this reason she’s been blocked from the page,” Sunette writes. “My first reaction to her remarks was to request her to go troll somewhere else on Facebook. She also enjoys making derogatory comments on Steve Hofmeyr’s page.” Sunette took the matter further by distancing herself from her followers’ statements. “I cannot be held responsible for the comments of others, just as much as Beeld cannot be held responsible for the comments made on articles placed by them.”
Beeld asked Vinette to comment on the storm that erupted as a result of her statement. Vinette made it clear she maintains her comments were justified. “20 000 people – white, black, brown, Indian – were murdered in 2014. We are all living in fear,” she explains. She also told Beeld how shocked she was by Sunette’s followers’ reaction to her comments.

Cape Town - Local actress Vinette Ebrahim has been called “h*tn*t”, “me!d” and “racist” by fans of singer Sunette Bridges.
The 7de Laan star commented on a Facebook post by Sunette - daughter of late Afrikaans singer Bles Bridges - about the murder stats for white South Africans in 2014.
Sunette wrote: “While the whole world is celebrating the start of a brand new year I would like you to spare a thought for the families of the 217 White South Africans who were butchered by Black Savages in 2014... [and] 3 hours into 2015 they claimed another victim…”
An angry Vinette then replied: “Well, how does it feel Sunette Bridges to be wearing the shoe that my people wore for so long?
“How does it feel to be the downtrodden minority? How does it feel to be in fear for your life on a daily basis? “How does it feel to be a second class citizen in the land of your birth...?
“You will never see freedom as you knew it again. You have made it impossible for yourself and those like you. Racists. Face the fact, ‘baasskap’ has disappeared never to re-emerge again.”
“You and Steve Hofmeyr. Your little boeremag enclave is exactly that... little.”
After Vinette’s reply, thousands of comments have been posted in response to her message, most swearing at her and urging others to boycott 7de Laan.
But Vinette has stood by her statement, telling Beeld: “20 000 people - white, black, brown, Indian - were murdered in 2014. We are all living in fear.”
