Hello eveybody, this is my rant.

Ok, so i got a new PS3 because my old 2008 40GB got the YLOD, any way I can log into my account fine and that but when i try to update GranTurismo 5 ,what a freaking nightmare 21 damn updates and the first one is 608MB which takes a hell of a long time.

Now the (1/21) update download fine but once the 2/21 update is done it tries to install it but it fails causing the whole update folder to corrupt and i have to start all over  ive also noticed that 30GB has been lost from my PS3 (i know that a % is taken off so you dont get the full amount), Ive formatted and the free space remains as 263/298GB why not 298/298GB?

Also when i format isnt the firmware meant to be as it was V3.56 not as i updated it to 4.40?

Regarding the formatting,

the version will always stay the same, once you update there is no going back (legitimately)

Ok, now is there any other way to obtain the game updates with out using the useless pre-ingame downloader?

Yes there is.
But not sure if you will be able to manually install them on a OFW PS3.

Quite a mission but give this a shot: http://www.ps3blog.co.za/guides/how-to-download-game-patches-and-updates-via-your-pc/

To download patches:
Simply replace the <BLUS12345> with the title id of the game.

I would just like to go to a ISP's data center and tap into a 100meg line just for an hour...then I would be happy.

Never ever update the ps3 online

Never ever update the console online. Always update via download then flash. And u cant revert ps3 updates. It always goes forward, never back. If u ever changed ure ps3 harddrive with a new one, you would know that. Yip it takes. 2.5" drive and its damn easy, not sure on the latest console.

Part of the drive is reserved for system usage. Thus the loss in space.

If you get stuck with my method let me know will help you out. I only update manually as the PS3 always seems to screw things up some how.

Rickster, who is your ISP ?

I remember back in the day, I had the exact same problem with my GT5 and it's update patches. I had a Vodacom Business uncapped account and it would never download all GT5's patches for me. I switched to a temporary IS account and remarkably I was able to download the update it kept on failing at.

So, if you're with Mweb / Telkom perhaps, get yourself a 1GB IS based account and use that, trust me, you'll be surprised at the results. If you're already have an IS based account, then something else is at fault. I have an IS based uncapped account and I've never had any problems with game updates failing me on my PS3.

My ISP is MWEB, but the updates in total are 4157MB and its not a download issue, its more of an installation issue, when it finishes the second update it tries to install but it fails giving a error code 80029564 and resulting in a corrupt file.

And i have to start from 1 again.

I got that EXACT same error code. Believe me, just get yourself a 5GB / 10GB capped IS account and try downloading it again, you'll see it will work. I know it might sound weird, but trust me, give it a shot :)

Try buying the academy edition(think thats what its called) bout R300 now... has all download content...

LOL, you don't need to go to IS's site directly, any reseller of IS bandwidth will be fine. Plugg has a capped 5GB account for R90:

https://www.plugg.co.za//?_page=product_cat:t_Multi Column Table&id=53

They make use of the IS backbone. Get yourself a 5GB account from them, and let it rip, you can thank me later.

PS: R90 is the monthly cost, just make sure you cancel the account then. I know it might seem to be a lot of hassle, but I'm 110% positive this will solve your problem, it did for me 1.5 years ago.

Or you can have a look at OW's accounts, they're also on the IS backbone and you can buy them once off as well.

But why does it fail in the installation of the update...not the download?

GT5 game id:

Where in the SA are you Rickster? I might have members close to you that might provide you with updates on a dvd up to recent updates. The downloads work.
