Super Rugby 2017

Peyper is a good ref but he's being judged on one call he made last week. He was really good in the Stormers/Chiefs game and no one seemed to bat an eye after that game.

The problem though, is that when a non neutral ref makes a bad call, some people (and there are those in this thread) get their panties in a bunch and scream bias and cheating (when it could simply just be a crap call).

I still think that Sanzaar should have gone the neutral ref route though to remove any doubt but that's not to say that a neutral ref would make the right calls.

Peyper can't read the offline on NZ players because of their play style. This was a huge problem last week and will probably cause a big problem this week. Either way, I think the Lions have proven they can out play a Ref and will surely do it again this weekend.

They really should have gotten Angus Gardner to be the referee for the final. He is not only neutral but he is one of the best referees out there.

Caving into calls of bias from one side should never happen based on one call, good on SANZAR for sticking to their guns.

This policy is written into the tournament protocols and appointments are made according to this policy on a weekly basis. [It] is also the policy used for the finals last year as well as this year.

"This merit-based policy was reflected with the appointment last year of New Zealand referee Glen Jackson to referee the Hurricanes-Lions final in Wellington. Sanzaar stands behind the policy and believes the best referees should be available to officiate the best matches."

So it's all good when New Zealanders get a local ref..?

Good on SANZAAR for sticking to their policy. If a neutral ref was appointed, there would would have been calls that SANZAAR is biased to NZ......

All that we are asking for is consistency in calls being made. If it is good calls, great, if it is bad calls, be consistent on the bad calls both ways......

I guess the losing team will always be the ones complaining the most. I feel for refs in this day and age. No matter what, they will receive more criticism than compliments. Difficult job.

Yet, when Glen was refereeing the final last year nobody was moaning?

I did some reading, many people moaned.

Glen Jackson is the wrong man to referee the Super Rugby final

OPINION: Glen Jackson may be the best referee in Super Rugby, but SANZAAR made a mistake appointing him to the Super Rugby final.

By selecting a New Zealander to control a home final for a Kiwi team, they have opened themselves up to controversy.

The likelihood of bias coming into the match is low, but it will be the first port of call for Lions fans should Jackson make a big call against them.

And it would be no different for Hurricanes fans if a South African was put in charge.

Having a neutral referee removes any perceptions of the man in the middle favouring either side.

Jackson's control of games this year has been strong and there is little doubt the final will be no different.

The same could be said for fellow Kiwi Ben Skeen, who is television match official.

But why not remove the possibility of controversy?

Australian Angus Gardner runs the sideline with Kiwi Ben O'Keeffe. While Gardner is not as talented as Jackson, he would do a good enough job controlling the final.

Neutral referees were scraped from Super Rugby in 2009.

The idea was that referees at Super Rugby level were able to be impartial regardless of which teams were playing.

It allowed the competition to focus on merit-based appointments and cut down on travel for referees - which also cut travel expenses for SANZAAR.

Each season since, the issue pops up once or twice a year following a controversial match, but there has never been any evidence of bias.

Crusaders assistant coach Dave Hewitt was the latest to call for neutral referees following their loss to the Lions earlier this year which was controlled by South African Stuart Berry.

But Jackson's appointment has been made and it will not be changed.

...

That is in a Kiwi's perspective.

Writing in the South African Times, Liam de Calme also referred to the bruising Hurricanes defence and influence of Barrett.

"With their rush defence fully operational the Hurricanes applied near unbearable pressure on the Lions' ball carriers," he wrote.

NOW THE DUPES WANT TO BLAME THE LIONS PLAYERS. SHOCKING AND DISGRACEFUL STUFF FROM THE QUISLINGS!

now many may excuse this as trolling, but then to go back to the MyBb Forum in 2016,

offside line being largely ignored by Jackson, as expected

More offside than not.

The line speed is impressive but it helps Glen Jackson ignores the offside line. Hurricanes don't have to put the ball in straight at the scrums or lineouts though. Jantjies needs to calm down a bit.

Where are the penalties for offside?

and so it continues... people moaned, but we all know how error-ridden the Lions played on that day and that the Lions pivot at 10 had his worst game on that day in 2016. Not to take away that the Lions was a young deserving team to play on that day.

We need neutrality, even when little bias is shown. National Favourism is a thing, and there have been many studies on this topic in the Northern Hemisphere which proved the point.

Where did the Hurricanes complain?

Also, why would people complain if a neutral ref is appointed? That makes no sense.

I don't think fans would complain, I think Peyper would have every right to complain if his reward for being the best rated ref was given to someone else in contravention to the stated SANZAR policy.

jy het te veel tyd op jou hande ou :D

All I want to see is the best team winning the Super Rugby competition. Last week the Lions and the Crusaders came out on top because they were the better teams on the day and consistently so throughout the competition. I have no doubt that both these team will set high standards, the only bias I expect Peyper to have is that against low standards.

To be 100%, Peyper also struggled with the Hurricanes offline the past weekend. And I assume he will struggle again this coming Saturday. The issue is the intensity and pace at which these top tier teams from NZ play. The ball is so quick it makes reading the offline very hard. For us as TV viewers is blatantly obvious but on the field I suspect the Refs are having issues on the quick ball.

The AR's need to step in here too. 9 times out of 10, the ref is watching the ruck/scrum/lineout with his back to the backline. The AR's should be watching the midfield players to see if any of them have encroached the offside line before the ball is out.

Do remember that most angles, on the side, you see on television is not at 90 degrees and on the ball’s height. In the Northern Hemisphere, some stadiums, they run aerial cams on TMO decisions, something which is not really introduced to our rugby as assistance. We see what we perceive.
