Super Rugby 2018

So the Sharks are 3 points off a qualifying spot with 2 games remaining. Above them are the Rebels on 35 and the Jaguares on 38. The draw in the second round to the Waratahs and the robbery against the Hurricanes have really cost them (along with the error strewn and awful play at times).

Remaining games are against the Stormers away and the Jaguares at home. Both games are obviously must wins. The Sharks need the Bulls to do them a favour and beat the Jaguares at Loftus. The Rebels would need to lose to one of the Reds and Highlanders (both away games).

The best the Sharks can probably achieve is 7th (unless results go perfectly and the Highlanders have a nightmare final 2 games and the Rebels lose to the Reds, thus finishing 6th) and try avoid the Crusaders in the quarter finals.
 
Jean-Luc du Plessis ruled out of the last two games of SR2018 with a medial collateral ligament strain in his knee. I guess his participation in the RC is now in doubt as knee injuries are not the fastest healing.
 
I've got this feeling that the Stormers are going to win on Saturday. It's the typical thing that South African teams do. The Sharks are in with a chance of qualifying which means the Stormers will suddenly play like champions. :D
 
I still don't know how the Sunwolves has beaten the Bulls... I didn't get to watch the game, but I read that John Mitchell was unhappy with the TMO calls. Neither team had their best selection, the Sunwolves less than the Bulls. Anyway 3 SA scalps now. The Sunwolves have selected an even lesser team against the Waratahs, again lacking depth on lock with some swap outs.

Well, they don't have that many games to play at Newlands anymore, they need to do the grounds proud. There is much history there, and I still believe the entire move, and sudden lack of funding, is politically driven...

Under the current circumstances they are in debt, they also owe Aerios due to mismanagement, maladministration and selling out the stadium’s marketing rights and they also owe their commercial arm… So, when they do have to sell the stadium, which belongs to WPRU (and all its clubs), they need to settle those debts.

Then they need to enter an agreement with the CoCT and the managing body behind Cape Town Stadium as the primary tenant. The rental will be insane… then Cape Town Stadium needs to be upgraded to accommodate sponsors, especially the loosie holders (not to mention that many loosie holders has long-term agreements at Newlands which also needs to be terminated, there are clauses…) As primary tenants, they will also need to accommodate the other tenants and events held at the premises.

I believe the commercial arm must buy Newlands, share it with the WPRU clubs. It won’t change that CoCT wants the Western Province and the Stormers to be housed at Cape Town Stadium. Selling Newlands, it will only be that long until they run dry…

Currently, the whole situation hangs around the Aerios case.

WP Rugby: Feuding partner ‘to prove’ R250m claim

Cape Town - Aerios, the company which managed the advertising rights of Western Province Rugby (Pty) Ltd before it was liquidated at the behest of the WP Rugby Football Union, say they have begun High Court proceedings to prove their claim for damages against Western Province Rugby.

Newlands has been rocked for well over a year by the dispute: the former company which ran WP Rugby’s commercial interests was controversially liquidated in late 2016 and is the subject of an ongoing Section 417 inquiry into its affairs, presided over by retired Judge Eberhard Bertelsmann.

Aerios, who branded the liquidation a fraudulent plot, contend that they have suffered damages worth approximately R250 million as a result of the decision taken by the liquidators of WP Rugby to determine the advertising rights agreements which had been concluded with Aerios.

In a media release, they said the matter had been set down for a pre-trial hearing before Judge Thandazwa Ndita in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

Costas Constantinou, managing director of Aerios, said he was surprised the liquidators had refused to concede that Aerios suffered damages due to the determination of their advertising rights agreements, particularly since one of the liquidators, Chris van Zyl of Mazars, “had previously deposed to an affidavit in which he acknowledged that damages would be suffered by those parties whose contracts with WP Rugby were to be determined”.

He added: “It seems to me that the liquidators are concerned that Aerios will have the largest proven claim against WP Rugby once our damages claim has been proved by the High Court, giving Aerios far greater control over the resolutions which are to be passed by the creditors of WP Rugby,” he said.

“The liquidators appear to be concerned that Aerios may call upon (them) to take steps which may be adverse to the interests of the other creditors whose claims against WP Rugby have been approved by the liquidators, including the Union and Remgro Sports Investments.”

Former WP Rugby minority shareholders Remgro revealed in mid-2017 that they would not be converting loans to the union into stakeholding, and would seek payback of around R40m which helped pay staff and player salaries at Newlands.

Aerios contend that the primary motivation for the liquidation of WP Rugby was to terminate the advertising rights agreements they had held.

Haha I picked a 10 point margin. Hopefully it'll stay like it is now.
 
Yoh, quite the blow-out in the end. 23 points is a bit of a hammering.
 
Good result coming here from the Sharks' perspective. They needed the Rebels to lose to possibly sneak in the playoff backdoor and it's happened.

Disappointing for me pick wise. I really did not expect the Reds to win this one. Especially with Kerevi injured.
