Supermarket Reward Programs

And if you try to follow all the rewards programs you will need two wallets or more for the cards :p
TYhe Checkers one makes the most sense, you only need your phone for the voucher codes.

OK, well strictly speaking, its not a true reward program, but it saves you some bucks

Checkers use a funny system. You install a app, then look for products you get discount on, buy the item, and then generate a discount number at the till.

Yes, but rand for rand, Checkers is far cheaper than PnP... And at the end of it all, those rewards from PnP don't cover the savings made at Checkers.

Tried and tested, brah.

PnP Smartshopper is not really about loyalty or discounts. It's a marketing tool used by the company. They can now track individual customers shopping patterns. I would think this would be used for more direct advertising.

Buy nappies and expect emails advertising baby formula for example.

This is just my opinion, however.

Agreed, that data must be awesome, I'd love to be able to see what they can deduce from it.
I would use it to identify up and coming/growing neighborhoods in the country to get the best place to put up a McDondalds for example.

PnP Smartshopper is reaaly a gimmick. 1000 points = R1.00. You have to spend a *****e full of money before it really amounts to anything at all.

I used to get 10% back with vitality/pnp - which made it worth while. Now i dont give a cr@p about pick n pay. in fact i dont even go into the store as I find the experience is stressful :-( I think I am becoming like my dad - I expect too much - people at shops need to smile and be polite.
They gave me a R200 voucher to win me back as a customer and I cant even bring myself to use it. But thats a whole different subj.

Best benefit I use now is Ebucks @ Checkers (15%), Vitality HealthyFoods (15-25%) + Ebucks (5%) @ Woolies for everything that I cant find or dont want to buy from Checkers. The reward plus the experience makes it worth while for me.

OK, I didn't know about the Checkers Eezivoucher one. Just looking at it it could save us as a family between 10 and 20 percent per month.

But WTF does "redeem all" mean? Does it mean I want to buy everything they have a voucher for?

Redeem all means nothing, you just get a code that is valid for that day only. You score when you buy things that are on the app, and on special in the store big time.

It is the least paying system tbh. The only reason i use it and gained nicely from it was due the the way Discovery Vitality worked with multipliers. Been using it for about 2.5 yrs now.. have approx R1.2k worth of points on it besides the fact that I get back on avg R75-100 bucks cash back on my Discovery card. My avg grocery bill per month is between R500-800 (I've been using 22Seven for over a year and a bit so yes it really is.. only over 600 bucks when every 3rd/4th month, i live on own and cook).

Thing to remember with PnP & Discovery Vitality is the way CashBack works.. i.e. Healthy Foods :p Make sure you buy the correct volumes such that healthy vs bad foods go 2:1 ratio and you get max back besides fact that you only get cash back on healthy food (Miles on total spent with multiplier)

eBucks + SmartShopper (not worth much) + Discovery Vitality = lots of money back per month
Yes and no.. if you use a Discovery card for their partner stores & cashback programs you additionally score Discovery Miles(10x the normal value). Not too sure if it all works out good though.. but i think so. https://www.discovery.co.za/portal/individual/improve-health-healthyfood

PS. btw PnP points expire after 3 yrs if you do not convert it.. thankfully someone told me though i havent reached that period but something to remember.

Clicks recently changed their system to auto allow vouchers at till point which is the best system EVER!! previously you needed to print it and ive lost like R400-500 cash backs from them.. the new system allow cashier to ask you if you wish to use it thereby preventing loss :) Hope others, particularly PNP and their silly slip print out go digital as i ALWAYS lose their vouchers for 2x 3x etc points

Clicks 3 for 2 deals are awesome. Just their product range can be lacking at times.

Clicks is lacking compared to Dischem. Only if I am really desperate will I venture into Clicks.

If a company is giving you something back for free, you are not the client, you are the product.

100% agreed.

Yeah.

And where does the money they give back come from?

They factor it into the price as part of their research and development costs. It's called "big data". It allows these businesses to strategise with a high degree of certainty. Allows them to put the right products on their shelves at the right prices to produce the best turnover, etc.

No big retail company is going to survive today without having access to this sort of information. They would be at disadvantage to their competitors. Every time you swipe a card at the till the company knows exactly what you bought, frequency of purchase of that item, your preferences (seasonal and year round), etc.

This!

Discovery Card + Smart Shopper = WIN!

Just recently started with eBucks, but this only works at Checkers, which kinda sucks :p I prefer PnP.

I get such minimal reward from pnp on the smart shopper that I stopped using - hate a bulky wallet.

I use my healthy foods card at pnp though.

Wish these rewards companies can get some sort of app for the phone so I don't have to carry cards.

You need to link them. The points are multiplied if you link the cards and swipe both :)

The part that grates me is that you have to have Vitality which is pointless if you don't go to gym. Also, I get back 15% (on all products, not only fat free milk) on ebucks from checkers, with that 15%, I buy a makro voucher with 40% discount. So that translates into me getting R24 cash out of every R100 spent at Checkers. Lastly, on a like for like basket, I'm convinced that Checkers is cheaper overall than Pnp. With checkers, you get the Eezi Coupons app, with PnP, you get brand match which only comes into effect after buying 10 products.

And you can only use it on your next visit and it is a ****ty piece of paper and it expires after a few weeks

Yea but you get those cr@ppy discovery miles back now.. x 10, which i think works out to +/-6% of the value of the transaction?
Granted you get 25% in healthy foods, but you also get that at WW, so if you did this at WW, you get the 25% off healthy food AND 5% back in ebucks... which you can then use to buy Makro vouchers for big purchases?

I dislike Checkers :( It smells! lol (it really does).

Checkers is my closest supermarket though, so will be pushing my points there and see what I can get out of it.

Only recently started with eBucks and I don't have a FNB credit card so only on my cheque account.

I hate that till slip program they have.. they really need to make it all digital and automated.. but then i guess they would lose out if there was 100% usage of vouchers

They should just deduct it from your bill there and then.
