So after tons of re-search and consideration I've decided to give SabNZB and Sickbeard a try. From previous threads I've managed to get everything sort of working.

The last thing I need is another News server as the Mweb one just doesn't cut it. I've narrowed my choices down to Supernews or Astraweb. Anyone here have any advice for me before I take the plunge

Thanks

Depends on how much you want to spend and how much retention you need.

Supernews and Astra have ~2000 days retention. I rarely find I need anything that old though, that why I went with 40Mbps Unlimited Usenetbucket with a 10GB Newsdemon block account for a filler.

I like Astrawebs pre paid bundle, you buy 1TB for $50, I've had a bundle for nearly a year now, still have 73GB left, so depending on your download requirements, this could be your cheapest option.

Good deals for slower lines but expensive for the faster packages though. 40Mbit package is R240pm, with Usenetbucket I pay ~R70.

Yeah - that's a bit of a catch 22 for us at the moment. Faster speeds = more disk IO (more requests). More disk IO means more disks, which of course costs money as you can only put so many (and it's not allot) disks in a server.

We are still fairly small, but growing and expanding rapidly. As we increase our amount of spindles (a continues upgrade process really) and we are able to sustain more IOPS across the cluster, the costs will eventually come down. As we grow, I do expect that prices will drop - especially on faster accounts. For now though, we need to build up the user base and generate the cash flow first.

Take my advice, and get the CHEAPEST, CHEAPEST monthly usenet access as your "main" downloading mechanism.
DON'T worry about super long retention and stuff here, as most of your stuff will be within 3 years old (to be honest, most would be within a few weeks/months)

Then, get a good block account or two TO FILL UP THE OTHER 1% you might be unable to get.
(To complete the download if your cheap provider has a missing article, or doesn't have that 6 year old file you suddenly want)

The block accounts will last for ages because they are used minimally - your "cheap" provider will cover 99% of your daily downloads.

Seriously, use this technique - don't be an idiot and pay a high price to get "one provider that will do everything"
you waste money and really, you WILL get missing articles/etc on those accounts too - don't fool yourself.

For the cheap provider, I recommend Usenet Bucket and they really work well. Super cheap at only 3 euro per month for up to 10Mbit!!
If you find my help useful and want to give UsenetBucket a shot, use my link, I get 2 weeks free that way :D

Try it, they give you a 7-day free trial with no CC details needed.
