Hi,

So in my area it shows Supersonic Home broadband coverage is finally available. And im curious if any of you guys are running those packages. I have been using adsl and just recently these past 2 years a 24month contract with MTN 4G LTE. Which has ended.

Supersonic is showing a package which i am very interested in since it would allow to me stream and download games without worrying about reaching my data cap every month.

I have never had this done and when i went to the mtn store today. They said anything to do with supersonic is online to apply for it. So i asked for there number and contacted them to make sure its available in my area.

Once applied on the supersonic website does it take up to 2 days for someone to come out? And does this person bring everything needed including outside antenna to get the best signal? Also im very curious and hoping that latency will improve from taking this package since users running these packages are meant to be prioritized on the tower? Meaning no congestion from what i have read and decent speeds.

If anyone can clarify the above i would really appreciate it thanks!

I think op wants uncapped. You may also try a wisp, private wireless with a small dish for now.

They're *alright*, can be better than Afrihost sometimes but still suffers deeply as a whole.

You can browse around the Süpersonic LTE threads here, I'm running their Uncapped package and it's been wonderful for the past 8 months, with very little downtime due to tower glitches and consistently high speeds when I was in a more open area (now I steady around 20-30mbps in my new leafy area in the day and 50-60mbps at night).
The fact that I can cancel easily at any time like rain is a huge plus, but I am prepared to deal with them when fibre does arrive so I can save a bunch per month and get more consistent speeds hopefully.

I can vouch for their product but definitely not customer service, as well as a few others here, but if you don't want to deal with lack of communication and headaches as a result, it's definitely understandable. Otherwise, it can be pretty great data volume at decent speeds in most places.
 
Oh to answer the question, no they just take a while to process the order and they ship out a B612 router + SIM only, it's up to you to purchase your own Poynting etc. equipment if you're in an outskirt area, otherwise the router alone indoors is more than capable to push 200mbps in rare cases.

Sounds good then overall and i will try find some more threads, was checking Afrihost prices and for there uncapped pure lte is 2949 rand? Thats crazy i don't mind waiting for supersonic uncapped to deliver the stuff the mtn tower isn't even that far from my house. Do you know anything about getting prioritized with the fixed LTE supersonic and as latency goes is it better than the normal 4G LTE?

It's inconclusive at the moment, people have tried running tests on their expensive mobiles and comparing it to B618's & B818's and it seems that there is some kind of throttling / priority shifting going on but it's minimal and random to say for sure. Compared to Cell C's Connecta Flexi which has extremely reduced speeds and higher latency in most cases, Süpersonic's offering is definitely higher priority.

Yeah, Afrihost's price is triple and throttled after 1TB because they have to go through another channel to offer that unfortunately.

The only stark difference between regular MTN LTE and this Fixed is routing, all traffic goes through JHB at the moment which does introduce latency if you're not close to the area at the moment, and regular LTE is routed accordingly to your location.

I see thanks for clarifying that to me. I stay in KZN around the south coast. So I am assuming my traffic gets routed through Durban to JHB regardless. At the moment im getting like 220-240 ping to Europe 150-160-170 bahrain sometimes singapore is giving me 170-200.

As For Speeds on the tp-link AC750 Wireless Dual Brand 4G LTE Router i bought varies from 20-40 max 60 Meg Download speeds and for Upload 20-30 Meg. That's with my 24month contract normal 4G LTE 100 gigs day time night time 50 gigs. Which i can cancel now anytime since its ended.

I also have my adsl as back up still but its only 1meg upload and 4-6 meg download speeds so can't stream with it but latency are better sometimes and best line speed i can get.

I don't think ill be able to get a hold on a b618 router so ill stay with the one they give me.

Hopefully ill maintain similar if not better speeds if its somewhat prioritized. To be able to stream consistently and not worry anymore. Since Adsl or 4G was the only things available in my area. And now Fixed :).

Also i saw some people changing there band or something to improve there connection or mhz didn't quite understand how that works.

That's more or less as you describe the routing and ping yeah.

There's no need to worry over the higher end Huawei routers, the B612 is quite capable and has access to a band the B618 does not which can gain some extra speed in the temporary spectrum in the meantime.

There's no real need to set a specific band like it is with rain but that's easy as well on mobile and desktop if you want to experiment.

lol nice, ill be placing the order tomorrow. Once it arrives and the setup is done or if i have any issues. Could i message you in regarding how band thing works :). Will post my results on this and on the other thread aswell.
 
If you don't live in Johannesburg, and you want low local latency, then don't get Supersonic.

For some reason they are routing all traffic via Johannesburg, which means that if you live in Cape Town, and want to game on CPT servers, you will have 90ms+ latency, which is really bad for local gaming.

Testing on the same Tower:
On my MTN cellphone I get less than 50ms when playing local, and about 170ms when playing international, while on Supersonic, I always get around 100ms local, and 230ms international which is very bad.

They have no intention of fixing their routing, and their support also don't know what you're talking about when you mention it to them.

The speeds that I get is great, but the latency is very bad, so if online gaming is important to you, then don't get Supersonic, unless you live in Johannesburg.

Their support & client communication is also quite bad. I've been a customer for more than a month now, and still can't access my online portal to manage my account, check my usage & invoices etc.

In short, you will probably get decent speeds, because MTN has a solid network. Latency will be bad if you don't live in Johannesburg (not MTN's fault, it's Supersonic that doesn't know what they're doing), and support will be non-existent.
 
I see what your saying since i live 2 hours away from durban. And if there was a server to game on in durban i would get routed to first jhb then back to durban increasing the latency.

But If you connected directly to a jhb server instead cape town your latency should be lower? Most servers should be in jhb for csgo/rocketleague/cod?

Also I use Exit Lag With normal 4G LTE to reduce ping and keep it stable.

Is it possible to do these tracerts so i can see your results or if anyone else running these packages.

Wow, yea that actually is really bad for living in CPT your ping should be way lower to EU and even locally it should be better than that. Weird routing for sure.

Your EU ping is still lower than what I'm getting overall on MTN 4G not fixed. And locally mines 40-55 ping. You have way fewer hops than me but that's probably because your in CPT.

Yeah, I do however get solid speed and so on with this service, so you can expect a good experience with anything that doesn't require low latency. I also game now and then, and I can definitely feel a slight disadvantage when playing against other players. I get better latency when I use my phone as a hotspot, because then they route traffic properly via CPT for me, and that makes a big difference in local and international latency.

When you use your phone as the hotspot are you using normal MTN LTE Data then?
