Supersport UHD 4k?

The SuperSport channels are broadcast natively in 1080i resolution. Most sports channels worldwide use this format. The entertainment channels on DStv are broadcast natively in 720p.

All we need is a cheaper good alternative for dstv.... no not internet tv no

Without being overly pessimistic, Multichoice has created an effective monopoly and (for all intents and purposes) are protected. For any other to become a meaningful alternative, it would take a massive balance sheet, dogged determination, an abyssal reserve of good fortune and some enabling by government to succeed.

I did say "close to"

Well it depends on how you look at it.

1080i is technically the same resolution as 1080p just updated at half the frame rate.

So it should look the same just have a different motion like it's stuttering.

No p is broadcast anywhere. It's all i for 1080 EXCEPT through streaming services.

So framerate for Football on SS sub 50hz?

Technically the refresh rate remains 50hz.

However 1080i updates half the frame then the other half, then the first half in grid pattern overlay.

So you have kind of a weird blur between half frames if you are sensitive to it.

It's kind of a catch all between overall resolution and frame updates while maintaining similar bandwidth.

Just saw something interesting on DSTV Now

So 1080p streaming now?

Seems it is!

Looking at usage:

Beware those 2 little words "UP" and "TO"

Of course, but I remember distinctly it was always just up to 720p.

7Mbps is high usage for only 720p, thus me thinking it might actually be 1080p.

1 Gb/hr = 3.8Mbps. Now the question is: what compression has been used? It maybe 1080p but the compression could be shyte. 1.7Gb/hr is reasonable and is looks stable for a 4Mbps connection. Assuming nothing else is using bandwidth.

IPL broadcast on the Decoder is barely passable for 720p at the best of times

That's not the point to be honest, any channel you select on DSTV Now gives the same option for UP TO 1080p. Was just checking the score when I saw that.
