President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC leadership feared a blood bath in North West if they had gone ahead and removed the defiant premier and ANC provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo.

After a week of upheaval in which protesters called for Mahumapelo’s immediate resignation, a heavyweight delegation led by Ramaphosa has given him a lifeline by deciding to do more consultation before taking any action.

Mahumapelo may be a corrupt, criminal pos but he was elected. You can't go removing elected because a mob is rioting, in addition to it being a bad idea in general, what prevents some other politician from organising a little mob and going on the rampage to grease the removal of an opponent to his benefit. In any case, the ANC have the option of recall, but Supra's power base is NW and he's probably refusing ala Zuma. If the riots don't stop they'll probably offer him a national posting in return for stepping aside.

Premier isn't elected though is he? I stand to be corrected but I think they're nominated by the council.
Yes we don't elect any officials but you get the idea. Not even MPs are technically elected. We elect parties and they then decide who to deploy

Umm that is exactly what is going on at the moment.

So he was NOT elected then, he was deployed. And the masses need to pressurise the government to remove their deployed official, under the simple guise of "this is not the POS we voted for".

He was elected as the ANC leader/chairperson for North West, and the chaiperson becomes premier.

I think we've one or two cases where the president overlooked the provincial chairman, but in the majority of cases the chair becomes premier and the masses know this when they to polls

And that is where the problem lies. The masses did NOT elect the premier; the membership of the ANC did. So, while the masses may vote ANC they have little to no say in who takes the helm. And that little disaster is a foundation of many of our country's woes.

This protest is being led by people who had a hand in voting for Supra in the ANC lists and conferences. Yes a lot of the looting sort may not have had a direct hand but neither do they really care what happens are just there to riot and loot.

The masses elected the ANC knowing that if the ANC controlled the Provincial legislature, Supra would be Premier. Arguing that someone who voted ANC in 2014 provincially didn't elect Supra is like saying someone who voted ANC in 2014 nationally didn't elect Zuma. If you didn't know who was coming into power, you should have done some research before voting.

These people are literally protesting that they voted ANC in 2014.

And they will still vote ANC in 2019.
