Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet pricing and launch date

So I still maintain you need 4GB is the minimum, with 8GB recommended for decent performance.

Dude Win 8 x64 runs fine on 4 GB ram. I run 4 gb on my desktop and its a Core2Quad Q8600 with a 4890 GPU and it still runs all games on max on a 1080p and I can alt tab easily.

More RAM only inceases load times and page file will store otehr open programs that are not in front of you. system responsiveness wont be much with more than 4gb. Windows automatically reserves the most ram for windows itself.

Please don't talk rubbish and than argue with people who are actually using what you say wouldn't work. we might know cos we running 4gb ram.

Will the Pro allow you to install any flavor of Windows 8 on it or is there a specific version?

Only one desktop version of windows 8....

Windows RT = Windows for ARM based computers (this is currently released on tablets and its like Android in the sense that its easier to program and more mobile friendly)
Windows 8 = X32 and x64 based PCs. (this is the one for the surface tablet and desktops)
Windows 8 Phone = Windows for mobile phones.

Wouldn't it make sense to make a leaner version for a device that only has one hardware setup?

Erm. So is that windows 8 Home, Pro or Enterprise be that 32 or 64 bit?

I can see how you think there is only one version.

@system32 I know about 20 comments have disagreed with you so far, so I apologize for reiterating their feelings.
It's complete bull that you need more than 4GB of RAM for normal usage.
My main dev machine has 4GB. And I've never had a problem, even with my habit of never closing things.
I often have Photoshop, multiple VS instances, FF, Outlook, Metrotwit, Skype, and a few other smaller apps (calc/notepad/MSPaint etc) open with absolutely no problem.
I also play Battlefield 3 on here on high.

I used to have 8GB, and when one of the sticks died I honestly didn't notice until seeing it by chance in the task manager.

p.s. FWIW, my Ultrabook (i7, HD 4000, 4GB RAM) can play BF3 (on low). Given that the game is probably GPU bound, I would say that that will probably work on the Surface Pro too.

Lmao system32 sorry but you deserve a wee bit more flak then anyone is giving you about your claim running windows 8 on a machine with 4gb ram.

Windows 8 can run faster than windows 7 even on something with a dual core cpu and 2gb ram.I know because I'm currently running it just fine for the last few months on my old hp dv6 laptop,I haven't upgraded yet because I'm waiting for a decent convertible/hybrid to be launched(wish they could release a thin yoga with an hd screen and decent gpu) but honestly I'm very happy with running windows 8 on my current relatively ancient system and have had no issues at all.

So if anyone wants to know if you can use windows 8 with 2gb ram my answer is a definite YES.

I am running Win 8 Pro on my old Core2Duo 6600 dev machine. 4GB RAM.
Mind blowing how smooth it is compared to Win 7 that was on there before.

Thought 4GB would be too little but have yet to see it jump above 2GB in resource monitor.

Got an old notebook that I am going to try next. Old hardware being revived and put to use. Bonus.

Also, just spoke to my designer, who has a W8 PC with 4GB RAM.
He uses Photoshop + Maya + 3DS Max all alongside each other (along with browser and email obv) and say's he's never had a problem.

@Fudzy - I had a 560TI (when I was playing BF3). It since died, so for the last few months I've just been using my crappy onboard one. Haven't tried gaming, but PS/VS etc etc all work perfectly.

Most people in the know, recommend 8GB or more for Windows 8.
Sure you can go with 2Gb or 4GB, but load up Office, Outlook, Chrome, and suddenly your'e out of RAM and paging.
Ah this is pure gold, I didn't even bother reading the rest of the thread. Please reconsider who you regard as "People in the know"

Your comments don't refute the fact or provide sensible explanation for your position.
But that's OK, since you don't seem to know much about technology - keep to FB.
Do you honestly think that getting into a technical argument with somebody like yourself is a constructive thing to do ?

Allow me to illustrate why you should really think about checking out FB. Actually skip FB, you'd be better at home on twitter, 4chan or google+ :

Using Windows 8 Pro on 4GB RAM, with only 32GB disk free, with a few open applications, it will not run well.
Most recommendations are 8GB RAM and 256GB for OS, Office, etc.
It does run well. In fact, it runs perfect on a 5 year old C2D T5750 laptop with 2GB of ram and a 128GB SSD. perfectly smooth and boots up instantly.

You are not going to believe me though, but fortunately it seems that whatever you have convinced yourself of, has extremely little bearing on reality.

Remember that Surface Pro is considered to be a Ultrabook class device.
AnandtTech (one of the most respected technology sites) says:
I'm not too bothered by Surface Pro's pricing, as it's ultimately an Ultrabook competitor. However I would like to see a bundled touch or type cover at those price points.
Dude you're absolutely right, anandtech really SLAMS the surface pro on it's utterly insufficient RAM.

Ultrabooks generally have more RAM and more disk.
more disk, where can I get more disk. I really need more disk.

RMA it!!!! Warranty ftw.

On 64GB disk, once you've installed Windows 8 and Office 2013, you've used 32GB, leaving 32GB for data.
Sorry to reply to my own post, but according to theverge, on a new 64GB Surface Pro there could be as little as 23GB free, with a whopping 41GB unavailable.

How about responding to the other posts?

While that sounds crazy and I hope thats reducable I have to say I personally will not be affected by it,on my current dv6 I only have a 160gb hdd and yet I have around 100GB of free space because everything goes on my external hdd anyway.

I could easily live with using an external hdd on a surface.1tb 2.5 inches go cheap these days.
