Surge in cell banking usage

A 140% increase since the launch?

How can anyone arrive at a number like that?

200 000 transactions versus zero. Surely the growth must be infinite. But I guess infinte doesn't sound as impressive or as convincing as another meaningless percentage.

140% sounds way better than other figures,it's wrong but sounds cool. now they have 200 000 odd new people using it, time to start charging them! :D

"What this tells us is that cellphone banking is being used as a convenient cousin to Internet Banking," says Christo Vrey, Absa General Manager: Digital Channels

NO!!!!!!
What this tells us is that people will do just about anything to reduce their monthly banking costs. :( If they announced that all over-the-counter transactions were free, they would see the same result. In fact, they would probably lose their Internet banking, ATM and Cellphone banking users in one foul sweep!

Well, Cellphone banking was available since 2001/2002, so I guess that figure is close to correct! (Since launch of the free offering) Only difference is probably 1) Better Marketing and 2) It's Free (considering the amount of bank charges these days)

"2) It's Free"

I'm sure I read in the small print in their ads that it was free for the first six months only...

spamming me with SMS's promoting their product... you could probably call that better marketing.

transactions are not free AFAIK. they just don't charge you anything above the normal transaction fees for cellphone banking. exactly the same as internet banking (except that you pay a subscription).

I just checked on my phone. This is for Absa:

Monthly fee- free
Balance - free
Mini Statement - free
Comprehensive Statement - free
Prepaid - free
Transfer - free
Payment - free
Proof of Payment - free (for SMS, email and Fax)

Now, I assume this is ONLY for Cellphone banking! You probably still pay a montly fee for internet banking, and all the associated costs if you do it via Internet. I am doing all my banking (that I can) via cellphone, and I have scored a bit with bank charges.

This is valid until 30 September 2006 (according to their website).
Now, the only catch is, if you're using WIG banking you still pay for the SMS's sent from your phone.
If you're using WAP banking via Vlive, it free.

What are the charges after that?

I smell something

Only the banking seems to be free, for the time being. The banks probably get a kickback from the cellery companies for the SMS's and WAP traffic generated.

Isn't it lovely when a banks and telcos get together to screw us?
