There is only one trend and its not a surprise.... they are over worked and under paid
 
When building simple web apps you don't need a degree.

Try do anything remotely scientific and the "self taughts" wouldn't cope.

They can be lucky most jobs in SA are just run of the mill line of business apps.
 
Started my career as a software developer. Didn't have a degree, but could run rings around most of the graduates.

I think it is great that there is a lot of flexibility around how people can make their breakthrough into the IT sector. One doesn't neccesarily have to rack up insane levels of debt to get into an IT related role. That, and a wide range of qualifications are accepted for an IT role (i.e.: matric, N.Dip, BSc, BCom, BTech, BA, etc.). Education never ends; we always live and learn new skills and knowledge on the regular.

I will leave my commentary at that. I want to get into my classy woman era now.

Anyone worth their salt is hardly underpaid. This article is mostly BS (as are most recruitment site articles). Any dev with 6-10 years working experience (graduate or not) who earns R50k should either admit that they're crap or start job hopping to get to where they should be...
 
A lot of degrees is unnecessary. It also creates a lot of false expectations. Why would one need a degree in coding.
 
There are jobs that have the actual "coding" part as somewhat of a secondary skill, for those, usually the degree in computer science, physics, stats, maths etc. helps. Those jobs also tend to pay multiples of what you see in these surveys.

I don't know why this causes so much angst. Whether degree or self taught, once you have the first few years under your belt, that is what's looked at as well as your aptitude and attitude.

Sheez keep in mind, when I was doing tech/uni , comsci was a newish field: you could do a BSC.ComSci or a BSCInformatics but no BSCEng, closest was Elec Light. I went part of that route at tech back then because it gave the engineering with the end being comsci but if you had to ask around, development was a very very niche field. Programming was old Basic, Pascal or C/C++. Not sure if java was as prevalent but I know MATLAB was heavily uni used package.

This was even before the begrudged VB :unsure: and c# was much later. But we did learn concepts over language so that helps.

And you ask about how many are in senior positions, look at the above. Those of us who are in the field for 20+ years had a very different entry landscape to current, not to mention technologies etc.

Personally, I still like the whole mentoring aspect, one can teach and learn a lot by sharing knowledge.

Never built a web app lol and been a dev over 10+ years. Guess I’m lucky then?

Got my degree a few years ago and don’t think it really changed much in my understanding tbh. Busy with Honours though and feel this is stretching me a bit
