Surprising BlackBerry usage statistics

who's dl'ing movies and tv series...are they not being charged due to file sizes?

They do it using services that split the download into many small files. They then transfer to their computers.
I have friends who do it.

Seems a bit ridiculous to be that much of a cheapskate and jump through so many hoops.

Ironic thing is those users are often part of the vocal crowd screaming "BIS is so slow!"

How the hell does one download movies and series using BIS? I'd love to know. And why are they complaining? I pay for uncapped internet usage so downloading onto my phone is my right, just as it is their right to limit the speed at which I'm allowed to download if I download too much.

That is Vodacom - I have been there - done that - got the T-shirt.

There was a site called zdownloads or something that didn't charge a guy I work with.

I wouldnt have tested it myself, but he insisted he wasn't charged.

You need to read the T&C's a bit more thoroughly. But yea, you're paying... what? R70 a year/month (I don't know, so correct me if I'm wrong, AFAIK it was free at first) for an unlimited connection to browse/facebook/BBM (or whatever). Which is an insane small amount to charge for something like that.

Downloading to you phone, no problem, but using your phone as a bridge to download to your PC? There's the problem.

You pay for uncapped mobile internet for browsing and email, you do not pay for uncapped internet that allows you to download movies, series and whatever else chows tons of bandwidth.

Considering how expensive mobile internet is it's a darn good deal, pity some people will always have to abuse the system. I could understand if they were moaning about an adsl account or something but they should moan about people downloading all the goodies we use our dsl lines for.

No one in hell that I use anywhere near 160MB/month. I probably use max 50MB, but then my BB has no 3g :(

the ads specify that it is unlimited internet, so there is no abuse there, just getting most out of your buck.

disclaimer: I'm on android

Yeah. They need to come up with a solution faster. My blackberry is practically useless during the evenings.
It was a lot better about a year ago when I just got it. Now its so damn slow. No chance of me getting a Blackberry again when I upgrade next year.

Many people may be surprised by the latest BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) usage stats, and what has caused this change

I'm having a dumb moment here. What has "caused this change"?

essential these stats prove that the average blackberry user is paying more for their data than non-blackberry users.

it might actually be cheaper not to have BIS. too bad that without BIS a blackberry is no longer a smartphone.

so its a dumpphone that requires a smart service for it to be a smartphone.

I think the chart is a bit skewed.. Apps in BB only really took off in the 2010/2011 period and even then when i think about the number of updates i use to do it was insane compared to iPhone( tho iPhone apps are a heck of a lot bigger :-( ). Let's see fb, then twitter really started pushing out in SA. So to kinda say the expected avg should normalise to 20MB as per 2010 in graph seems off.

I still don't get the whole clamp down being done.. it just makes zero sense and they kinda hitting the final nail in the BB coffin. Basically they scaring away users from the platform in droves, i've had lots of people ask me what to get next from android/s2/s3 to iphone NOT due to phone features but purely due to the news of the clamp down(and they were underutilizing it i.e. little to no apps). Network switching yes and no.. depends on packages.

Now i'm never advocated downloading huge files etc but i do find the clamp down hard handed? It reminds me of a game which was dev'd and every time they found a overpowered race-class combo they'd savagely gimp it instead of just normalising/fixing it.

Keep in mind though that data that gets sent and received by a Blackberry is compressed to death by the Blackberry server in London...I think the average is about 80% compression....so 100meg via the BIS service would end up being a lot more than via normal network.

Moore's law

160MB per user may not sound like much, but considering that the average usage per BlackBerry user was only around 20MB two years ago it becomes significant.
How to mislead with statistics - 2 years ago is a long time in Web/Cell/IT.

Moore's law makes a big difference.

In 2 years, most BB users have upgraded their handsets to newer more media intensive devices.
The web has got bigger and richer in content.
BB Cameras have gone from 0 to 5MP & better, video is more common.
BB-OS7 is more demanding, BB-OS7 Updates are bigger, etc.

So, for a normal user to use 160MB/month is easy.

I think VodaCom is blaming the "down loaders" for the problem,
when the real issue is that 1.5Gb/s is not enough based on how technology has improved in 2 years.

If it's such a problem, just use the T&C's and disconnect them already.

Guys I need some input from you. Can Vodacom see exactly how much data one uses on their BB?
Reason I am asking is - I was told by someone ;) that I use about 500mb a month.
I find this impossible as I can barely browse never mind download anything.
Could e mail total that? I do not see that possible as then my Gmail would be full after a few months.

I have a Tablet and have a 2gig account and never even come close to that and on that Tab I use it heavily.

I am wondering about these stats ;)

1.5Gbps for 2 million users? You have got to be kiding me I'm moving off Vodacom tomorrow
