Surround Sound Help

ARC is not the same as optical, arc does support DD+. eARC has higher bandwidth and can do Atmos
Oh thanks for confirming that! I thought the spec of ARC was basically S/PDIF over HDMI so the limitations of one applied to the other but the more posts I come across the more I see it's definitely not the case (lower level Atmos can even be sent over ARC), and it makes sense in that regard, apologies for that

Yup streaming services can send atmos via ARC, though it does struggle with true HD :(

Okay so tried the movie now and no sound at all. Im starting to think it's my PS3

See attached file. Im sure this movie should have played fine.

Ah ok! It might be actually, pity we can't see what signal most soundbars receive to diagnose small issues :/

Have you ticked all the options in optical audio and such? Maybe rebooting both?

You can on both of mine, on the Sony ht8500 it was leds that light up, on my JBL 9.1 it shows on the display.

I think i have an idea why it's not working true surround sound

According to one review, you need hdmi arc for true surround sound because this is a "prologic ii" and therefor all speakers will play sound

It still sounds great with all speakers but i guess i just wanted that true surround sound.

So i guess that's that then, I'll have to wait to get a new TV.

I see! Good that you checked up on that quirk.

Best of wishes for the rest of your setup though!

What model of TV do you have? IMO you should input your soundbar directly to the TV. Going through other devices is likely to cause confusion with the formats. If the TV has toslink you can plug into there. If your soundbar has HDMI in and out you can also plug your PS3 into the HDMI-in. I use HDMI-in with my sound system for the Nintendo Switch because it has problems outputting 5.1 from the TV.

You can use YouTube videos to test the 5.1 output btw. It's very helpful. I also have a test file in my Plex that I use frequently.

So i have an old TV that has regular hdmi (no arc) and no optical.

I currently use hdmi on ps3 to TV for video/picture..i don't think adding another hdmi to the soundbar will do much?

Also i believe YouTube doesn't output 5.1. I do have the YouTube app on the ps3 as well
