New Suzuki Ertiga gains more space and fresh engine

Suzuki has unveiled its new Ertiga at the Indonesia International Auto Show, with the seven-seater MPV growing in size and gaining a new 1,5-litre petrol engine.

Running on the Japanese brand’s latest Heartect platform (also underpinning the new Swift, Ignis and Baleno), the second-generation model is 130 mm longer (at 4 395 mm) than the original, which along with added width results in what Suzuki calls a more “spacious cabin environment with expanded luggage space”.

Under the bonnet, the new-generation Ertiga features what Suzuki describes as a “newly developed” 1,5-litre petrol engine delivering a “combination of fuel efficiency and performance”. Expect the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions to carry over.

While the outgoing 1,4-litre mill makes 70 kW and 130 N.m, the new unit is worth a little more, at 77 kW and 138 N.m.

The new Ertiga will be manufactured in both Indonesia and India, with exports planned from both countries. If the new model is confirmed for South Africa, expect our market to receive its shipments from India.

New Suzuki Ertiga Revealed

An all-new Suzuki Ertiga Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) was recently revealed at the Indonesia Motor Show and according to Suzuki South Africa, it’s expected to arrive on local soil early in 2019.
There’s a strong case to be made for an affordable and reliable 7-seater MPV such as the Suzuki Ertiga which offers a practical transport solution for both private owners and the rental channel.

Since its launch back in 2014, the Suzuki Ertiga has sold well locally with more than 2 276 units finding homes in South Africa. There is, however, an all-new second-generation Ertiga on its way to South Africa in early 2019!

Key details

The new Ertiga made its debut at the recent Indonesia Motor Show and it’s some 130 mm longer, 40 mm wider and sits 5 mm higher than the current model which means its interior will be more spacious. The Ertiga’s ground clearance, however, has been reduced by 5 mm to 180 mm. The new Ertiga will be built on Suzuki’s Heartec platform which underpins the new Suzuki Swift which is due to arrive locally in June 2018.

The Ertiga will employ a more powerful naturally-aspirated 77 kW/138 Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine that will replace the current 70 kW/130 Nm 1.4-litre unit and will be offered with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption for the manual is claimed at 5.5 L/100 km while the automatic is claimed to consume 6.0 L/100km.

Key features for the new Ertiga include projector headlights, LED tail lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, electrically folding/adjustable side mirrors, 6.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated cupholders, roof-mounted air vents and wooden inlays for a classier interior finish.

In terms of safety, the new Ertiga will be equipped 2 front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, rear reverse camera, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and hill-hold assist. Note that South African specification for the Ertiga has yet to be confirmed and will likely differ from the specification offered in Asian markets.

The new Suzuki Ertiga will be produced in Indonesia and India but models destined for South Africa in early 2019 will be imported from India.

that depends, if its the weird and wonderful one piece Indian seats, made for short people, that you cant fit seat covers.

and yes, beige reflects the sun directly into your eyes, if its on the dashboard,

maybe its made to make a car look classy? in India everything else is dark/black so something lighter is seen as classy?

Something must be wrong with the Indians in India, our Indians are the trendsetters when it comes to such things, maybe our Indian made cars division for the South African market should move to Durban, we'll show them how it is supposed to be done.

1. Soon after buying my Ertiga 1.4GL, I had driving lights installed and upgraded the headlight bulbs.

Well, I did inform the Dealer Principal that the 1.4L engine is slightly under-powered for the long road.

Fuel economy is quite good, about 15Km/l.

The Maruti Ertiga is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 7.44 - 10.90 lakhs (ex-Delhi).

What you'll like:

• A 7-seater MPV at the price of a C segment sedan. Sub 10-lakh petrol variants are well-priced
• Practical & spacious cabin, now with a usable 3rd row & larger boot
• A peppy petrol, efficient diesel & convenient automatic on offer = take your pick
• Car-like to drive and city-friendly size (unlike most other 7-seater MPVs)
• Features such as that sweet head-unit, projector headlamps, cooled cup-holders & more
• Dual airbags, ABS + EBD, Isofix anchors & parking sensors are standard. Automatic gets ESP too
• Maruti’s excellent after-sales service, wide dealer network & fuss-free ownership experience

What you won't:

• Build, quality & refinement are strictly average for a million-rupee car
• Diesel carries a whopping Rs ~1.9 lakh OTR premium over the petrol
• Small 1.3L diesel is unimpressive at this price point. Lag is obvious with a full load of passengers
• 3rd-row isn't for everyone as the 2nd-row doesn't tumble forward, making ingress / egress tricky
• 4-speed Automatic feels old & outdated. Not available in the top variant either
• Some missing features such as an auto-dimming IRVM and auto headlamps + wipers (expected at this price)
• Waiting periods are already 3 months long for most variants

In India, MPV = Toyota Innova and Maruti Ertiga. These are the only two which have enjoyed success, while others like the Renault Lodgy, Honda Mobilio, Tata Aria / Hexa, Mahindra Xylo etc either failed or saw limited success.

The recently launched Mahindra Marazzo is the only other MPV that seems to have a shot at success. Interestingly though, all these 3 MPVs (Ertiga, Marazzo, Innova) are of different sizes & compete in different price segments.

It's as if they are untouchable in their own segments. In no other car category of India do we see just one player garnering all the sales.

The Ertiga was launched back in 2012. It gave Maruti a new segment and diversity in its product line-up. The 1st-generation Ertiga was targeted at the urban buyer with a need for 3 rows of seats. The car was more of a 5+2 seater than a proper 7 seater.

The pricing as well reflected that the Ertiga was a good alternative to a sedan, offering additional seats for the same money.

Since launch, the MPV has sold 4.2 lakh copies in a span of just 6 years. Sales usually hovered around the ~5,000 units / month mark.

Just like the outgoing car was based on the Swift platform, the new Ertiga is based on the Heartect platform that underpins the new Swift, Dzire, Baleno & Ignis.

Due to this new lightweight platform, the kerb weight of the car has actually gone down, despite the larger dimensions and a bigger 1.5-litre petrol engine. The kerb weight is 1,135 kg for the petrol Ertiga and 1,220 kg for the diesel variant.

The Ertiga has lighter sheet metal than other UVs. The MPV feels slightly better built than the Swift & Dzire due to the larger and heavier doors, but has that typical "Maruti" feel to it (we don't mean it in a good way). Don't even expect the solid "thud" here. Some panel gaps are inconsistent too.

While the paint quality is acceptable, it's certainly not exceptional. The Ertiga's build is 'average' at best for a car costing a million bucks.

Maruti has used the naturally-aspirated, 1.5L K15B petrol engine from the Ciaz & retained the 1.3L from before (new 1.5L diesel coming soon).

Both are equipped with the company's mild-hybrid system with an idling start / stop function. The petrol gets an additional lithium-ion battery under the front passenger's seat for improved fuel economy. Both power the front wheels via a 5-speed MT, and an ancient 4-speed AT is optional on the petrol.

The Ertiga comes with dual front airbags, front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, Isofix child seat anchors, ABS + EBD with brake assist, front seatbelt reminder with buzzer, rear parking sensors and high speed warnings as standard. The automatic variants further get hill hold assist and ESP.

The 2019 Ertiga is powered by a 1,462cc, 4-cylinder K15 petrol engine that puts out 103 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm. The power and torque figures are higher than the old 1.4L's 94 BHP and 130 Nm.

1.3L Diesel - Makes 89 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm @ 1,750 rpm.

The second generation of the Suzuki Ertiga has launched in South Africa. Here are the specifications and pricing for the budget-friendly people carrier.

The Suzuki Ertiga is an affordable and sensible MPV. Now in its second generation, the 7-seater has just gone on sale in South Africa.

“Our engineers and designers have worked hard to create an MPV that truly delivers on its paper promises. There is more space, and even adults can comfortably use the third row of seats. There is also more power from the new 1.5 litre engine and it sports a higher specification level throughout the range,” says André Venter, divisional manager for sales and marketing at Suzuki South Africa.

The Ertiga has grown in length by 130mm, lifted the roof by 5mm and the vehicle is now 40mm wider, all of which makes for more space. The second row of seats can fold down 60/40 style and third row in a 50/50 fashion and when both sets are down, up to 2.820 metres of space is available with the front passenger seat also folded flat. Does anyone need to transport curtain rails?

“We believe that a true seven-seater has to comfortably accommodate adult passengers in the third row. With the deep floor, more hip space and larger shoulder room, an adult passenger of up to 1.75 m will be seated comfortably, even on longer journeys,” says Venter.

The Suzuki Ertiga 1.5 GL cabin

Despite its budget background, the Suzuki Ertiga comes reasonably well appointed. From launch there'll be 2 levels of trim: GA and GL. There's a new instrument cluster with a multi-information trip display, with the GL models featuring steering-wheel mounted controls. This steering wheel is also height adjustable. There's an integrated radio with Bluetooth and USB connectivity too. For those requiring power sockets, there are 2x 12V units fitted. Suzuki has also thrown in 2 air-conditioned cup holders.

In terms of safety, the Ertiga range all features 2 airbags for front passengers and ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD). Suzuki has also added ISOFIX-approved seat anchors for child seats and a reverse parking sensor system for the GL model.

Engine

The new Suzuki Ertiga features a new engine. It's the K15 1.5-litre petrol engine which puts out 77 kW and 138 Nm, with power going to the front wheels via the choice of a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic.

Three versions of the Suzuki Ertiga will be available from launch. All three models are sold with Suzuki’s promotional 200 000 km / five-year mechanical warranty and a four-year / 60 000 km service plan.

Suzuki's bigger, better Ertiga seven-seater lands in SA

Suzuki’s player in the affordable seven-seater market has been redesigned for 2019, the second-generation model boasting increased dimensions and a more powerful engine.

The MPV shifts onto Suzuki’s Heartect platform that boasts better collision performance and improved rigidity, and it’s a bigger package too, with overall length stretching by 130mm to 4395mm, while width increases by 40mm and height by 5mm, but the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2740mm.

The redesigned seats are said to be more comfortable and the vehicle can accommodate seven occupants, and Suzuki claims that adults will be comfortable in the third row.

The second row is split 60/40 and has tilt and slide functionality as well as the ability to slide back and forth to vary legroom between the zones, while and the third row is split 50/50. Both aforementioned rows can fold flat to increase luggage space. With all seats in place, there is 199 litres of boot space and the load floor can adjust to two different heights.

To haul all those people, Suzuki has replaced the previous 1.4-litre unit with a new 1.5-litre petrol engine, also naturally aspirated but now boasting direct injection. Mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, the engine pushes 77kW and 138Nm.

The Ertiga is available in GA and GL grades, and all versions are sold with a promotional five-year/200 000km warranty and four-year/60 000km service plan.
