Suzuki Ertiga (Gen 2)

New seven-seater Suzuki Ertiga arrives with fresh engine

Suzuki’s second-generation Ertiga – first revealed at the Indonesia International Auto Show back in April 2018 – has officially touched down in South Africa, boasting fresh styling, more space and a new engine.

The local range again comprises three derivatives: a GA-spec manual, a GL manual and a GL automatic.

While the outgoing Ertiga made use of a 70 kW/130 N.m 1,4-litre engine, the new model features Suzuki’s latest naturally aspirated 1,5-litre unit, here offering 77 kW and 138 Nm. Transmission options again comprise a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-speed automatic.

At 4 395 mm, the seven-seater MPV is 130 mm longer than its forebear, while its height has been increased 5 mm to 1 690 mm (the 2 740 mm wheelbase, though, is unchanged). Suzuki says the fact the Ertiga is also 40 mm wider than the original results in more shoulder room for passengers in all three rows of seats.

The Japanese automaker claims the new Ertiga’s seats are more supportive than before. With all pews up, the luggage compartment offers a claimed 199 litres, while Suzuki says dropping the seats reveals a more hard-wearing load space thanks to the fitment of metal plates in all the folding seatbacks. The GL models furthermore gain new roof-mounted air-conditioning outlets to service rear passengers.

The brand has also added the ability to lock the middle row in different configurations (to alter rear legroom). The seatbacks in the third row, meanwhile, can be adjusted by up to 15 degrees.

Up front, you’ll find a new instrument cluster and fresh audio system interface, while GL models gain chrome highlights for the steering wheel. In the lower section of the centre console, Suzuki has added two cooled cupholders and a 12V charging socket, with a second charging socket sited behind the front seats for those in the middle row of passengers. As before, each of the three variants is equipped with two front airbags as well as ABS with EBD. The GL models furthermore gain Isofix child-seat anchors and rear parking sensors.

At launch, the new Ertiga is sold with Suzuki’s promotional five-year/200 000 km warranty as well as a four-year/60 000 km service plan.

Suzuki Ertiga (2019) Launch Review

Suzuki has launched the new second-generation Ertiga 7-seater MPV in South Africa. Is the Ertiga still the sensible choice in the budget MPV segment? Gero Lilleike took it for a whirl in Johannesburg this week.

Suzuki's sales, both locally and globally, have surged in recent times and the first-generation Ertiga has amassed over 758 000 sales worldwide since going on sale in 2010.

Now, Suzuki has introduced an all-new 7-seat Ertiga to market. It goes up against the likes of the Toyota Avanza, Honda BR-V and Mahindra Xylo and it's built on Suzuki's new Heartect platform. The Ertiga is now longer, wider, taller and lighter than the model it replaces and features a new, more powerful, naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that offers 77 kW and 138 Nm of torque with a choice of either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. There are 3 Ertiga derivatives on offer, the base GA manual, full-fat GL manual and the GL automatic.

How does it drive?

We sampled the new Ertiga GL manual at altitude with a mix of city and highway driving in and around the bustling city of Johannesburg.

There are no fireworks under the bonnet and the Ertiga's performance is best described as average. The Ertiga has sufficient shove to get along at an acceptable pace, but acceleration is sluggish if you dwell for too long in higher gears and you have to gear down regularly to keep the engine ticking over in its sweet spot. The performance will likely diminish further with a full complement of passengers and luggage onboard. It is effective, however, as an A to B people mover within city limits.

With that said, overtaking on the highway requires some forethought as acceleration is not as punchy as you might hope it to be.

Suzuki claims a fuel consumption figure of 5.5 L/100km for the manual and 6.0 L/100km for the automatic derivative. The manual gearbox is a highlight as it shifts in a positive and direct manner without being notchy or vague.

Like the outgoing generation, another highlight is the Ertiga's ride quality. It's comfortable to drive and manages to deliver a smooth and pleasant ride. The engine is refined and the steering is nicely-weighted, providing ample feedback through the tiller. Due to its boxy stance, a fair degree of body roll is experienced through corners, however.

What's the interior like?

The interior, in our opinion, is a big leap forward over the previous generation Ertiga. The outgoing Ertiga was offered with a rather, dare I say, ugly beige interior. Thankfully, Suzuki has come to its senses and now offers the Ertiga with a black cabin which is more aesthetically appealing. Perceived build quality appears to have improved too.

At first glance, you might think that the central screen is a touchscreen infotainment system, but you would be mistaken. It's actually, as Suzuki calls it, a touch panel, housing a rather basic radio system with Bluetooth functionality. It looks fancy, but it's not really. Nice try, Suzuki...

The driver has mounted audio and Bluetooth controls as well as a neat space to store a smartphone along with a USB/Aux input close at hand. Two ventilated cupholders and ample in-door storage are available to passengers and a front and rear 12V socket is also useful.

In terms of practicality, the Ertiga shines brightly indeed. Second-row passengers are afforded generous space in all directions, and for added comfort, the seats can recline, which is a boon for long distance travelling. There are also dedicated rear air conditioning vents mounted in the roof for those seated in the rear.

The third row of seats are easily accessed by flicking a latch on top of the second-row seat, which then slides forward to allow passengers easy access. Surprisingly, space in the third row is ample, even for adults, which is mightily impressive.

With all the seats in place, the luggage bay offers 153-litres of space but it has a 2-part removable floor which, when removed, makes the load floor deeper, taking the load capacity up to 199-litres.

Obviously, load space for larger luggage increases substantially when you fold the third and second-row seats down.

In terms of safety, the Ertiga only offers 2 airbags for the driver and front passenger which could be seen as an oversight for a vehicle designed to carry up to 7 people. ABS with EBD is also standard as is rear parking sensors on the GL derivative.

All-in-all, the Ertiga is a very practical vehicle that is bound to serve both private and fleet owners well.

Should you consider buying the Ertiga?

The short answer is, yes! As you would expect with most new-generation cars, prices go up and this too is the case for the new Ertiga. It is, however, good to know that the new Ertiga has improved appreciably overall which helps to justify its new asking price. The Ertiga is attractively priced against the Toyota Avanza and Honda BR-V (both of which are ageing) and in our opinion, this new Ertiga makes a very strong case for itself in this segment. The Ertiga represents good value as buyers are getting a whole lot of car for their money. Our pick of the range is the Ertiga 1.5 GL manual priced at R239 900.

We will have the new Ertiga on test soon so look out for our thorough evaluation soon.

DRIVEN: Suzuki launches new 7-seat Ertiga in SA

Suzuki South Africa launched the latest version of its seven-seater MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), the Ertiga, in South Africa.

The vehicle, purposed to offer good value to budding families wanting to save a few bucks, is slightly bigger than the outgoing model and also boasts a new engine.

Regarding price, Suzuki South Africa managed to keep pricing competitive whilst at the same time fitting the MPV with a new multimedia system and revised interior.

The Ertiga is one of ten passenger cars Suzuki has in South Africa and one of four MPVs/SUVs the automaker has to offer.

Bigger proposition

The Ertiga was first launched in South Africa in 2010 and has, for the past decade, solidified itself as an important model in Suzuki’s stable. But as fate would have it, the Ertiga was in dire need for a makeover and did the Japanese automaker do just that.

At 4395mm the Ertiga is 130mm longer than the previous model, as well as 5mm higher (now 1690mm). In addition, the width also increased by 40mm. These might seem like small numbers, but the MPV does offer plenty of space for its occupants and is there more leg- and headroom all-round.

The increase in size also made its way to the third row of seats where two additional passengers can squeeze in. Suzuki says that although the two seats in the rear are normally associated with fitting small kids, passengers of up to 1.75m can squeeze into the space. Thanks in part to the extra 70mm of leg room.

When the two most-rear seats are in use, luggage space is an unexpectedly shallow 199 litres. But, when the two rows of seats are folded flat, the depth of the loading area increases to 1.9m. That’s deep enough to fit a surfboard. Flatten the front passenger seat and loading space increases to a massive 2.8m.

Engine and drive

The new Suzuki Ertiga does away with the 1.4-litre engine that did duty in the previous model and will, from 2019 onwards, use an updated version of the Jimny’s naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre engine. This revised unit, code-named K15B, delivers 77kW and 138Nm. Suzuki mated the engine to either a four-speed automatic gearbox or a five-speed manual -box. The latter was available at launch.

As is customary with Suzuki’s manual gearboxes, the five-speeder cogs over very nicely and does the mechanical feel of the ‘box give an assurance to the driver. The clutch is a bit light when pressed and can some slippage occur if you’re not modulating it with care. But once you have the feel for it, it becomes second nature.

Getting the Ertiga up to speed was not much of an issue and given the segment it competes in, it was never designed to be a sprinter. However, the engine and gearbox have to be worked to get any performance out of it and can one not skip the thought that the MPV might struggle when it has to carry a passengers and luggage. We will only be able to prove the last point when we get the Ertiga on test in the near future.

There is adequate feedback from the steering wheel, too. In traffic, the Ertiga’s short overhang at the front means that you can navigate through the city bustle with confidence and not be too worried that the big vehicle will struggle like a Golden Arrow bus. To further assist maneuverability is a turning circle of only 5.2m.

Strong features list

One thing Suzuki can proud themselves on is the strong list of standard equipment fitted to its vehicles. While some manufacturers try and milk customers for every cent possible, Suzuki has always aimed to send vehicles to market that feature most things from the Suzuki parts bin as standard. And the Ertiga is no different.

Depending on specification - GA or GL - there is a strong list of standard equipment fitted to the Ertiga and is the only option left for customers to choose the exterior colour they want. On the Ertiga GA buyers will find electric windows front and rear, LED tail lamps, a 12V accessory socket up front, halogen projector headlamps, two airbags for the front passengers and ventilated front cup holders.

On top of the GA, GL models offer a touchscreen from which to operate media devices (Bluetooth, USB, AUX) and radio, audio controls on the steering wheel, electrically adjustable side mirrors, air con for rear passengers, a 12V accessory socket for rear passengers (two in total), and reverse parking sensors.

In summary

The 2019 Suzuki Ertiga features a new face and a raft of alterations to make it relevant within the market again. Against rivals such as the Toyota Avanza and Mahindra TUV300 (both budget-beating seven-seat MPVs), the Ertiga has to impress the masses if it’s going to make any impact. And first impressions are that Suzuki has once again launched a good, honest product in South Africa.

Though the engine needs to be worked a bit in order to get performance out of it, the MPV will do little wrong to deter interested parties. Suzuki plays the beat-the-budget game and its vehicles, including the new Ertiga, attest to that.

REVIEW: Here's why the Suzuki Ertiga 1.5 GL is such a great people-mover

But how does it drive you might wonder?

So it doesn't go like a Ferrari, but it holds its own on the road. The 1.5-litre engine, code-named K15B, is good for 77kW and 138Nm.

It also might not look like Kendell Jenner of the motoring world either, but it sure looks much better than its predecessor with sharper lines and edgy styling, making it look more uniformed with the rest of its siblings in the Suzuki range.

Fuel consumption is a boon. We averaged about 7.9-litres/100km. In our stint with the car we drove from Somerset West to Paarl, to Hout Bay, and a full week of daily commute to the office and back and still had just under half a tank of fuel left. With today's fuel prices, that's extremely important too.

I was surprised at how smooth the gear changes are with its 5-speed manual gearbox, and it chugs along with ease in traffic or whether you're taking a leisurely coastal drive. Suzuki says the Ertiga's top speed is claimed to be 175km/h - not that you would ever even need to go that fast in this vehicle anyway.

Because the car now sits on 15" wheels, it also feels a lot better on the road and the wheel arches look a bit more filled in too. Body roll is less than before, but you might still have to hold on tight to the rack and pinion steering on a very windy day.

Suzuki Ertiga 1.5 GL (2019) Review

Fast Facts

Price: R239 900 (May 2019, without options)
Engine: 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol
Gearbox: 5-speed manual
Fuel economy: 7.0 L/100 km (real world)

Pricing and warranty

The Ertiga 1.5 GL sells for R239 900 (May 2019) and the price includes a 4-years/60 000km service plan. At present the Ertiga is also sold with the brand's promotional 5-years/200 000km warranty, adding further peace of mind.

Verdict

With the new Ertiga, Suzuki looks set to make inroads into a segment where it has not reached its full sales potential, at least not yet. Compared with its (more expensive) rivals, the Ertiga offers not only exceptional value for money, but is simply a product that is hard to beat in the areas where it matters most – space, practicality and comfort. That said, we would have preferred some additional safety features (particularly curtain airbags and ESP), even if that meant its pricetag would match those of the competition.

Nevertheless, this is an easy product to recommend. Suzuki continues to perform brilliantly in our Ownership Satisfaction Survey, following up its 2 previous Brand of the Year accolades with a second place (to Toyota), in this year's Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank.

I really like this MPV for what it is.
If I were needing a MPV to carry family around, I would hesitate to get one.

Yes I agree that curtain airbags would be a nice addition.

Looks like you enjoyed the review. Good.

At this market sector I would vote for the Suzuki as well.

Off topic

How has it aged and any major issues to date with it and what is the current mileage??

No issues at all, just normal stuff, like batteries, brake pads etc. Still drives like new, don't think I'll let it go soon. Very reliable. Cheap to service, normal service at Nissan, about R1400. Major service was just over R2000.
Currently at 117 000km on the cock.

Great feedback Beans.

With such feedback and that kind of kilos, I would also hold on to it.
