svchost.exe has started downloading something again. I have had this problem before and had to reload win xp. This helps for a few months and then it starts downloading again. I have disabled Win update.
In 2 days (4 hrs) it has downloaded 2mb and I don't know where it goes to.
Can anybody give me advice? I have managed to stop it with DU Super Controler.

look carefully at the svhost.exe, the name might be different, meanin a virus or trogan.
what you can do is have a firewall monitor, like zone alarm pro.
what you can also do is type in msconfig-if its windows.check the services runin and disable windows update and messenger.UNtick these services, also you can go to startup tab and untick suspicious start up entrys.
Still have a problem just post it.give more details

I hear there's a trojan who's exe is svchost.exe
Ummm should be on this forum too, search it and see? ;)

There's only suppose to be like 7 svchost.exe running apparently if i remember correctly

Download process xplorer

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Run the app, right click the service and view it properties to see which application it belongs to and which app is executing it. If it's a rogue app you'll know where to find it then and wring it neck.

Or do a netstat -a, under column "local address " will be your PC with a corresponding port thats open/listening.
Under the foreign address will be your pc: " with corresponding PID's if the connection is established.
Go to process explorer in the right hand pane and look for the PID column for the same PID number you saw in netstat.
If it's a foreign app/service you don't know, kill it. ( long way )

just check the svhost name carefully, check system32 folder in windows for virus in safe mode, turn off system restore. As the .dll(library file)can restore itself again.disable system restore

Hi, its a trojan virus. Had it on my laptop last week. I updated Norton and then it cleared it. All drives I had were infected, my partitioned 'd' drive, flash disk, psp memory card.

whilst on this topic, i sometimes have ccSvcHst.exe momory error when shutting down my PC... Heard it may have to do with Norton2007 Bug, is this true

I once had a virus, it thought it was smart calling itself scvhost.exe, saw it once, deleted it, I won :)

I cannot delete this file (svchost.exe) as it a Windows file, but I have stopped the download with "DU Super Controler"
How did you manage to delete it?

renamed the extension so the file read scvhost.exe.old then say delete :) , then checked in registry to see if it had made any copies of itself in the startup

dablackmark8 - I did not notice any effect of the virus on the psp. I just did a format on the memory card in the psp and all was good again. After i had removed it from my pc, reconnected and no virus anywhere

Do NOT delete svchost.exe otherwise you will have to reload windows.
Disabling clock auto sync. from my taskbar solved the problem as it was trying to connect but could not.

I have downloaded a few Registry Cleaner programmes and they all show 100 + problems but don't repair them until you purchase them.
The only app. that works is Registry Mechanic. It deleted all the crap.

Google svchost and and check the implications
