I wonder if this donut here in Port Elizabeth will ever be fully utilized?

Johannesburg - South Africa's World Cup stadiums are considered "too big" to stage MTN8 Cup matches, fueling fears the venues could become "white elephants".

The tournament, which features the top-eight finishers from last season, kicks off next Friday and notably no games are scheduled for the 10 arenas that staged the recent World Cup.

PSL chief, Kjetil Siem, admits this is because the domestic competition cannot attract large enough crowds.

"FNB Stadium, for example, is just too big to have teams like Pirates and Santos play there," he said on the Times Live website.

"Running the league is also a business and we have to make a fair amount of money from the gate takings.

"It is better when the stadiums are full," he added.

Of the ten World Cup venues, FNB (Joburg), Peter Mokaba (Polokwane), Mbombela (Nelspruit) and Nelson Mandela Bay (PE) have not been assigned any PSL matches, while Ellis Park, Loftus and Free State Stadium are primarily rugby arenas.

I love all the comments.

Opinions?

That stadium (Polokwane?) the Sharks played in tonight looked deserted. One can only wonder what's going to become of some of these new stadia.

Some of the stadia will be well used...

But yes, the majority will get little to no use unfortunately

We can hosts protests against poverty, racism and gender inequality in them, too. I say YES, we made it. Now we have big stadiums and we can do BIG things.

The grass of the stadiums will give a new meaning to the term "grass roots level" too.

I think those stadiums in the big cities, ie. Joburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town will be frequently utilised.

A company I freelance for tried to tender for Cape Town stadium to host a number of big events in the stadium over the course of the next 18 months, and there's a number of large requests out as well.

I think the smaller cities will suffer. There's just not enough interest / populace to fully utilise the stadiums frequently enough.
