SWC ticket prices to be slashed

Johannesburg - FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has revealed ticket prices for South African residents will be slashed in order to ensure all matches at this year's World Cup finals are sold out.

Following disappointing sales to overseas supporters, category two and three tickets will be changed to category four seats which can be sold only to South African residents for around $20.

Quoted in The Telegraph, Valcke said: "We will increase the number of category four tickets because we cannot have a situation where the World Cup is in South Africa and people cannot see matches.

"This will bring less income to FIFA, but we have already brought in the income we need to match the organising committee budget, which is $423m."

Valcke believes airline and travel companies are partly to blame for the number of unsold tickets.

"I think that we are facing a peak time where companies feel that they can put the highest level of pricing," he said. "We want to make sure that fans can afford to travel to South Africa.

"It is clear that people have decided that because it is the World Cup they ask the highest amount possible to maximise income, but it doesn't work today.

"They forget that it is a long distance to travel to South Africa, you need to stay for more than a few days, so they have to make offers that the fans can afford."

Valcke also admitted mistakes had been made in granting agency Match exclusive rights to sell travel and ticket packages for both South Africa and Brazil 2014.

"We have good lessons to learn from 2010 and they will help us in 2014," he said.

"For the World Cup 2010 we will have to sell the tickets to fans direct. We will think about setting up FIFA ticketing centres around the world."

I think that that article has caused a lot of confusion, as can be seen in the comments. No one will get a worse seat than they paid for. What will happen is that there will be fewer cat 1, 2 and 3 seats in a stadium, and more cat 4 tickets, that's all. Still a great move. I'll be trying again in phase 5.

The LOC budgeted for 60% of tickets sold. So now that they've met their target seems like those who paid thousands get screwed.

How are you getting screwed, I feel like I need to darw a picture sometimes. Here's what happens, in the old config cat 1 : 10 000, cat 2 10 000, cat 3 10 000, cat 4 10 000, I made the figures up but bare with me. Now we will have cat 1 10 000, cat 2 8 000, cat 3 8 000, and cat 4 14 000. Cat 1 still has the best view, cat 2 is better and 3 and so on. All that happens is that fewer cat 2 and 3 tickets will be avaiable, and more cat 4.

so e.g. you might have paid R400 for cat 3, but some bloke who benefits from the cheaper cat 4 tickets sits right next to you.

where do you think these "extra cat 4" people sit. perhaps further back but not much further for the amount others paid.

Well, cat 4 needs to be next to cat 3, they aren't going to leave seats open to make people feel special.

Here's what is happening, so far people have cat 1,2,3 or 4 tickets, but no actual seat numbers. What FIFA will do is 'push the seats together'. What that means is that if there are unsold cat 2 tickets, cat 3 people will sit where cat 3 positions used to be. Cat 3 then moves in to fill up the open spaces. That leaves open un sold cat 2 and 3 spaces, at the end of cat 3's seats, that becomes part of cat 4.

I hope my category 1 seats for 6 matches won't be next to categories 2, 3 and 4.

No, you can't be next to 2,3 and 4. Chaces are that you will be surrounded by cat 1 ticket holders. However, the people at the 'ends' of the cat 1 area will sit next to cat 2 ticket holders.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't good enough. I understand what you are saying cr@zydude, but personally I would of never have bought my Cat 2 tickets, if I knew this was gonna happen. I would of rather taken my chances with the Cat 4. Cause lets be honest, the advantage I'm gonna get for the extra R 700 I paid just isn't worth it now.

"Tickets for Category 2 and 3, which cost up to R840 will now be sold to South Africans for only R140."

The news24 article is very misleading. The whole idea of cat 2 is simply that you get a 'better' veiw than cat 3, which you still get.

In the Confed cup the difference between Cat 2 and 4 was not much at all. For the price difference it is just not worth it. I suspect it will be the same in the WC.

When I bought tickets I either went for Cat 1 or Cat 4, as 2 and 3 are not worth it.

This price cut obviously applies to games that are still available, which are generally the "lesser" games. So I don't think people can be too pissed off if you have Cat 2 and 3 for games that are sold out. Only situation where you can be pissed off is if you've already bought cat 2 and 3 for games that are still available for these categories.

To those of you who are saying that you feel cheated because you already bought cat 2 and 3 tickets, and feel you should have instead waited until this "price drop"

Most of the games are already sold out. Good luck getting tickets to Brazil, England, Portugal, Italy, Spain, etc. Only games like USA vs Algeria and Serbia vs Ghana still available.

So if you would have waited until now, you would be getting "cheaper" tickets to these games only.
