Sweden on Thursday officially recognised the state of Palestine, Stockholm's foreign minister said, less than a month after the government announced its intention to make the controversial move.

"Today the government takes the decision to recognise the state of Palestine," Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said in a statement published in the Dagens Nyheter daily.

"It is an important step that confirms the Palestinians' right to self-determination," she said, adding that "we hope that this will show the way for others."

Sweden's new Prime Minister Stefan Loefven announced in his inaugural address to parliament in early October that his country would become the first EU member in western Europe to recognise a Palestinian state.

While the Palestinians cheered the move, Israel summoned Sweden's ambassador to protest and express disappointment.

Israel has long insisted that the Palestinians can only receive their promised state through direct negotiations and not through other diplomatic channels.

Seven EU members in eastern European and the Mediterranean have already recognised a Palestinian state -- Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland and Romania. Non-EU member Iceland is the only other western European nation to have done so.

The United States cautioned Sweden against recognition, calling it "premature" and saying the Palestinian state could only come through a negotiated solution between Israelis and Palestinians.

In Thursday's announcement, Sweden's foreign minister said that "the government considers that international law criteria for recognition of a Palestinian state have been fulfilled."

The first one is ABSOLUTELY FALSE as the Palestinians didn't reject the plan and go to war, the Palestinians didn't really have a say in anything at all -> which is kind of the problem
also the first slide plays on terminology dishonesty - the land didn't change character or for that matter ownership when the British Mandate of Palestine came to an end and transfer of sovereignty was effected.

People who spread the first slide as gospel are liars or morons, but be careful that you don't point that out on this forum because it is likely to get you into trouble.

The second one is true with respect to the refugee crisis but is a little misleading as to the loss of land propositions

Should read 'Swedes with extremist leanings recognize Palestine'

//scarcasm off

Thank you :-)

The refugee crisis is perpetuated by the fact that none of the Arab states are prepared to let Palestinians integrate into their societies and the fact that the Palestinians are the only people in history that refugee status is passed onto the next generation, so that the original 700,000 odd refugees number now in the millions.

an arguable point although the stronger one is that the refugee crisis exists because the surrounding states (whether the description of Arab state is entirely apposite to Egypt is questionable) at the inception of the State of Israel deemed the territory of Palestine as waiting to be carved up and the Palestinian people as "second class citizens" and consequently fair game in a territorial pissing contest. To a certain extent both Egypt (particularly after the break away from Syria) and Jordan have evolved away from the original position towards a current one of accepting the Palestinian people as a second class people with a right to a homeland.

Did Israel recover recognition through negotiation? I think it's about time the rest of the world stepped in and sorted the problem out for them.
