My 13" white Macbook , September '08.
The trackpad button started to play up, seems like it's stuck down ? After a days fiddling I find it works if I loosen the battery!
I read about swollen batteries causing this. Should mine need replacing?
The specs as follows;
full capacity 4950
cycle count 774
condition normal
amperage 405
voltage 12575
runs about 5 hours unplugged
If so, where to buy in JHB ? I bought the laptop at Clearwater but really………..
Thanks all

Is this the unibody macbook? if you open it up and see the battery is swelling up replace it asap as it can damage the logic board or could explode.Batteries are around R1000-R1500 that was over a year ago when i asked how much it costs to replace the battery

Thanks, what is a unibody? Can I leave it out whilst plugged into charger ?

The unibody one have a taped design and a battery which must be replaced by an apple care representative .
By reading your "Can I leave it out whilst plugged into charger ?" i dont think you have the unibody do u have a removable battery?

yes, just a plastic key, undo with a coin and the battery pops out.
Yeah, it's happened to me. There was actually a noticible wobble if I placed the battery on a flat surface.

Should I buy a battery today will it have a 0 cycle count? Always worry about people that work behind doors marked 'do not enter, staff only !'

Thanks , they only have stock in Cape Town, I'll drag myself screaming to the Apple shop in Clearwater !!!!

Thankfully Clearwater is closed for renovations. Went to Fourways Mall, what an absolute pleasure ! Bought the battery and the problem is solved.
Thanks all, much appreciated.

Had the exact same issue with my 17" MacBook Pro. The battery swelled up so bad that the whole battery came apart. Had to get rid of it immediately, now im stuck with the power supply constantly on. But in any case i did some reading up on this subject and it came about that it is a common problem on the same MacBook that i have and the year. It sux to know that Apple does know about this common problem and does nothing about it. Apple should replace the batteries. It is their product and a common fault, we shouldn't have to pay for it. Anyways just my 2c. Very annoyed at that, a battery from Apple is not cheap, they should replace it.

I know in the past they've replaced swollen batteries free of charge, sometimes even out of warranty.

Plenty of forums mention free replacement by Apple. Here in SA they just looked at me and gawked !!!!

You should persist and contact Apple directly as well to light a fire under their asses.

I got the exact same:(
I just dont see justice in paying R1600 for a new battery.
So currently my laptop has converted into a desktop ever since the battery incident. sigh.

The way my battery looked, there was no way of repacking anything into it.:( Threw it away ages ago. Not sure where the pic is of how it looked but if i find it ill post it up. Only thing i could do with it is throw it away. From the pics that i saw on the internet mine was the worst case i had seen. So only solution is to buy a new one, and im sure it'll be extremely hard to come by a second hand one.
